Alexa, do something useful
Hi Everyone
Just wondering what do people use Alexa for in the car. Took some effort to get it to work, but few things i was interested in don't seem to work. Tried "play ... on Spotify" and "drop in on home" both don't work. looks like a subset of functions/commands to a standard Echo are supported. Anyone got/compiled list of commands? |

I used it to turn on the lights at home, or set temperature. And mainly to ask the weather.

And we’ve gone full circle back to that consumer privacy thread all over again. 🤔

Here’s the thing, unless you go live off-grid in Alaska, more than likely Big Bro can keep tabs on you in some sort of fashion. I have SIX Alexa’s in my home… I KNOW they are listening. I don’t give a crap. I’m not plotting a coup, or talking about home recipes for meth labs, or whatever hits red flags. They have more important things to do than listen to my shenanigans. But I very much give a flying crap about my car sending data points about my habits behind the wheel without my approval to do so, knowing that said data can & will be used against me, thereby INCREASING my living costs (potentially). I realize the two scenarios intertwine, but IMO, they are not of the same significance.

I use both Alexa and the BMW Assistant. Alexa is for out of car request like turning on/off home lights, weather info for a destination, answers to questions, status of my Ring cameras, and whether my garage door is open or not.
Hey BMW is for in car stuff which I won't list since it's self-explanatory. |

Back when there was BMW Connected, us on idrive6 could use Alexa, once the app changed, we got cut out. But I would use things like drop in and turn on/off lights in the house.
We also use Apple phones and therefore Siri. If you use CarPlay you can use ‘hey Siri’ to do most of the same things (assuming you use HomeKit) which controls many of the same devices Alexa does. That and ‘hey siri, play xxx playlist on Spotify’works pretty well! |

The only thing I really use it for in my car is some home automation stuff. I'll have to try asking it for a joke.
