22 X3 Wheels and Tires

I purchased a 22 X3 with the 275/35/21 / 245/40/21 set up about a month ago and I just got my first flat tire. I could not believe that it would cost about $1000 to replace both front tires. They probably had about 8K miles of life left so not in too distant future, this was going to come up. I read a few postings and I am still a little confused. I have a few questions.

1) Can I buy new 19 or 20 rims in order to have more tire options?
2) If I stay with the 21's rims, what are my setup options with All Season Tires?

Just a month into ownership and it is truly depressing (LOL!!!!!!!!) with this tire nonsense.

  1. Yes. You can buy 19” or 20” rims and tires. For your purposes, the stock 245/50R19 may be best. You can buy new OEM, or aftermarket, or slightly-used takeoffs from others who upgraded to the 20” or 21” rims. You may even be able to downsize to an 18” rim, depending on how your vehicle is equipped. I leave that to others to discuss.
  2. Assuming you live in the U.S., check out the offerings from various vendors, such as the Tire Rack.

My .02 is that you should look for a low mileage set from someone with vehicular ADD who has swapped out perfectly good wheels/tires for a snazzy aftermarket set up

You’ll pay a fraction of the cost of new

Craigslist, FB Marketplace, forums, etc

I believe that some Audis share our 5 x 112 spec w/ 66.56 hub so that’ll help to expand your options

I just bought an almost new set of my same OE Pirellis for $500 + shipping. Out the door half the price of a new set. There are better deals to be had.

Tires for bmws cost $300-400 each and last about 20k miles. Most also can’t be rotated since they are staggered.

20's and 21's for sure. 19's aren't quite as bad, at least last time I had to get them for the 550i. I've never had tires that only last 20k miles, but until now I've stuck with some Pirelli's that had great grip and lasted around 35k miles.

The rears for the staggered 20s are actually cheaper than the front, even though they are larger (I guess because they are more common).

You can get cheaper non-RFT, but I've actually had RFT save a couple rims and let me get to the tire shop (since I don't have any spares).

Your options for 21" all seasons are very limited. I took off my 21s with runflats (lasted 12k) and bought a 20" staggered wheel and all season tire package from Tirerack. Many more (and cheaper) options for tires and the ride is much better. Join the club!

1. Could the tire not be patched?
2. 21 inch All Season options are basically non-existent at this point (with stock sizes anyhow)… you can change sizes slightly and find some, but there aren’t many that truly work for this car.
3. Personally - if you really want to run ASs, I would switch to a 20 inch square setup… but that’s just me.
4. As others stated… look on the second hand market… I don’t mind the 21 inch summer runflats that come with the car, and I bought a FULL set of takeoffs from a member selling… bought and shipped for $1000 to my door… FOUR basically brand new tires. Swapped last season, and kept the other three for backup, in case, guess what?… A puncture that can’t be fixed! Now I have used tires that will most likely fall into the same tread depth of something I get a puncture in. So before I get a$$-punched on a new set of anything… I see if it can be patched… if not, is tread depth close enough to one of my saved tires where I can use that option… if not, THEN I’ll go buy something.

I’m going to be in this club. I got a decent deal on an on-the-lot X3 that was right except that it also had the 21inch wheels with summer tires. I didn’t think much of it because I almost always replace OEM tires within the first year anyway. Then I started shopping for non-RFT all seasons. Unreal how few options there are. My fault for not doing that research ahead of time!

I’ll be going with a square setup for practicality’s sake. (I think I can avoid shredding rear tires with my xDrive 4-banger ) Just need to decide on 19 or 20. 20 looks great but the roads where I drive can be pretty gnarly.

My 21" Alenza rears were at the wear bars by 20k miles, fronts looked to have another 5k in them at most. Just bought a set of Primacy Tour a/s "stop-flat" $1500 installed. Pricey and I hope they last at least 30k and should be much less sketchy next winter! Dealer wanted $1000 just to replace the original rears...
Ride is less jittery over bumps so it is an improvement.

Itchy trigger finger got the best of me. The wheels were supposedly backordered but TireRack shipped them almost immediately. Went with a square 19in Borbet Type W with CrossClimate 2s. Looks good for my taste. Will look better when I, you know, bolt them to the car instead of just stick one next to the front axle. Supposedly the BMW center caps fit for an OEM look.
