Automakers Are Sharing Consumers’ Driving Behavior With Insurance Companies

Came across this article from The NY Times this morning. BMW isn’t mentioned here but with our cars being smart phones on wheels, our data is probably also being shared.

Do we think BMW would monetize our PII, and telemetry data……..

I’ve asked BMW the question, so will see if I need to take additional steps via the ICO around GDPR.

Just bought a Ford Expedition a couple weeks ago. I was going through the privacy/data checkboxes and saw one about sending data to insurance companies “if you have a discount program”. No thanks. That got unchecked quicker than an M3C sprints to 60.

At least they were up front about what they were doing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

and exactly no one should be surprised... just as no one should use those insurance OBD2 discount trackers... the info can and will be used against you as well as all of us... anytime insurance gets its hands on statistics, it goes against us.

Has anyone been able to confirm whether BMW is sharing data with Verisk and/or LexisNexis? The My Trips feature sure seems like a way to do that.

I agree lol.

I’ve asked the question, but as far as I can see looking at the data privacy T&C’s there isn’t specific mention of insurance, but selected BMW third party service partners can access telemetry data if you give permission.

I also have the contact info for the BMW UK data controller, and will make a GDPR subject access request about the data they hold about me.

This is insane…. I don’t use any of those programs, but I requested a report anyhow… just to see if anything is in/on there.

I remember when I was in college, my math instructor had passed all the testing to become an actuarial and he shared a tidbit he learned which vexed a lot of us. The way the insurance companies view it the longer you go without an accident increases the odds that you'll eventually have one. So after a threshold time, they start preemptively raising your rates to hedge their bets. Did I mention I loathe insurance companies?

Some issuers attempt to monitor anywhere you go with your phone to create a risk profile. But don’t worry they promise not to increase your price…….

Yep, MyTrips is a no-go for me too. I also don’t like the fact that they’re retaining my location data for up to five years on some offsite server.

For some additional insights into the types of info that can be collected in modern cars, have a look at this video. It's interesting stuff:

I went in and turned mine off. But will circle back to BMWs online portal to review my other data settings and turn everything else off. Dang Big Brother. I normally don’t care about BB spying; have nothing to hide. But if you are somehow going to take my personal habits and use them AGAINST me to raise my rates, even though I have zero tickets, and no accidents, etc. You can go pound sand…. I will fight every aspect of this.

The "Settings" on My BMW app has only the Remote Software Upgrade.

Nothing on Permissions.

It's not the settings within the My BMW App, but the "Settings" in the iPhone for the My BMW App, yeah, kind of confusing.

Yeah, totally in agreement. Instead of BMW collecting data from repeat owners of their vehicles, that I find offensive; BMW should visit this web site and learn how (collect data) to make their customers happy by solving problems we discuss concerning the X3. We practically solve all the problems with the X3 via suggestions and fixes.

The old saying "the customer is always right" is long gone!
