G30 Steering wheel swap problem ( airbag light )

Hello,

A dealer tried to swap my G30 steering wheel to an M Sport one with vibro, heating and assistant pro options.

After the swap, certain buttons from the steering wheel didn't worked and i have an airbag warning light. The calculator says " the resistance is set up too high".

I saw that the dealer didn't turned off the batery, did anyone had this problem before ?

My steering wheel is from an X4 G02, maybe the X4 have a different steering wheel ?

Thanks in advance

I spoke to 2 different dealers on a 2019 X4 M40i that I was going to buy they both had all the options and color I wanted but asked if they could swap out the steering wheel for the m sport one. I advised I would pay the cost. Both said it required too many parts and they could not guarantee it would work without throwing code errors so they both said no. I’m sure it can be done but requires a lot of parts and cost and the right tech.

Necropost...I'm new to these bag topics, especially for these models:

So, wondering why the OP said a "3 stage" bag has 3 harnesses on it...and a short post later, states this:

G30 2-stage (32-30-7-855-725)

That G30 2-stage, part # 32-30-7-855-725 has three connectors. So is there any such thing as a 3 stage for BMW? Or is this a 2 stage?

More examples of PN# 32-30-7-855-725
https://recambiopl.com/en/code_product/32307855725/

3 connectors. So is this a 2 stage bag?

Thanks.

You can see in the photo there are three separate charges. Whether or not they call this two stage or three stage, I guess I can’t say definitely.

Thanks...but same as this, no? He calls this a "three stage". It has three separatge charges, no?

Then, he provides a part number for another (per my last post above #32307855725), that also has three charges, and yet he calls it a 2 stage. I don't get it.

I am wondering if #32307855725, will work with an older, custom M-Sport wheel in my '24 M340i, which came stock with a 2 stage airbag.

Been googling for hours on end and I can't seem to find a straight answer.

Oh I think I see the confusion. If you read through the pages and pages I think it is mentioned that you can use either two or three stage but you’d need the appropriate programming to match. Maybe there is just a mixup in wording - I think the airbag shown is the three stage that came with the car and the M sport wheel needed a new airbag which was a two stage. You can see right in the photo above the one you posted that the M sport airbag shown is two stage.

BMW switched over time (and honestly there are an array of parts that work and look very similar for the wheels themselves as you can tell from the spreadsheet). It is possible any current airbags that would work with the M sport are going to be the three stage. At the time though the two stage was readily available.

Sorry, I would say that you probably want to find a two stage airbag or figure out whether you can code the car to a three stage. Two stage or three, you don’t want the car to fire it incorrectly in an accident.

I am the OP by the way. I tried to give the “right” part numbers which is why you find the three stage M sport airbag part number even though way back when I first posted this it was only possible to find the two stage variant. I have no idea if those are still available.

If anyone is looking to do this swap,I have some stuff for sale. I have a used tristitch wheel and 3 stage airbag which is plug and play for sale. (the M buttons are not functional) I had it installed on my 2018 X3 M40i for 6 months before I sold the car.

I also have a brand new G30 wheel for sale, can package that with the airbag if you do not want the nice M stripe stitching.

Difficulty: Low - requires basic mechanical inclination and understanding of basic tools
Time: 20 min
Tools:

10mm socket (screwdriver preferred)
16mm socket
socket wrench
socket wrench extension
small, thin flat head screwdriver with ~3” shaft
regular flat head screwdriver
rags/soft cloths

1: disconnect battery

First, ensure car is turned off and ignition/accessory is off. Open the rear hatch and lift the cargo floor. Find the two plastic flat head screws, turn them 90 degrees. This should release the cover, exposing the battery. These instructions may vary if you have a spare.

Lift the red cover over the positive terminal.

Loosen the nut on the positive terminal. The nut should not come off, loosen it just until you feel resistance. Note that the voltage level in a car battery is not dangerous to human skin, don’t worry about touching something wrong. What you do need to be careful of is arcing - touching some metal between the positive terminal and the metal body of the car. For this reason I recommend a socket with a screwdriver attachment, a long wrench swinging around is going to be more difficult to control.

Hello.
I hope you see this message, even though i’m writing 7 years too late. Does it fit the other way around? So a wheel from a crashed X3 on a G30? I assume there wont be a problem with the airbag, since i’ll be using the one from my old M-sport wheel, right?

I had pretty much ordered it, but asked the seller to wait until next month. Just wanted to ask around and make sure that it fits.

Thank you in advance!
