V1 Laser Issue

All:
As soon as I got my X3, I ordered the Blendmount with overnight delivery, and went to plug in my Gen 1 V1 detector. Boom, laser detector kept going off nonstop.

Did some googling and other forum research, and it appears this is due to the laser cameras for gesture control (which I personally find useless anyway). For others that run across this issue as soon as you get your car, it appears there really only 3 viable options to stop false laser alerts in your V1:
1)Small piece of electrical tape on the little red circle between the bogey counter window and the radar band indicator lights.
2)Completely tape up the gesture control cameras in the overhead console with electrical tape
3)Disable Laser detection on the radar detector.

Hope this helps, and if others have a better solution, feel free to drop it in here.

Cheers!

My Gen 1 was so old I ordered Gen 2 - you can download app and disable Laser- dont think its used much by me
Otherwise the tape option is it

Definitely thinking of getting the Gen 2 V1. The thing is, if I can avoid it, I'd rather not disable laser completely, because that's what interstate troopers use on major highways in a lot of states. But the electrical tape thing just means no rear laser detection, so I at least have coverage in front of me - which is how the majority of laser cams are use anyway.

whats the point of having laser on the radar detector? it just signals that you are already caught.

ive turned laser off on my radar detector.

Fair points, here's how I've always seen that argument:
1. Harder for them to get a good read in states with no front plates (like mine).
2. Chance they get an error in the reading and by that point, as soon as I hear the beep, I've slammed on the brakes before they reset and fire again.
3. If I ever buy a laser jammer, then the laser ping lets me know to 1) slow down, and 2) turn off the jammer.

I had the gesture control feature & never wanted it.

V1G2 - just turned off laser. If I had the choice I would code off gesture control as it's the gimmick of the century but you can't. Laser isn't used around here and the only way a detector is going to pick it up is off a deflection, which seems extremely implausible anyway.

I had gesture control on my 2020
with executive pkg and had that annoying problem. I picked up my 2021 without executive=no gesture control!

Problem solved!

Agree, I love the rest of the exec package, but gesture control is a total waste gimmick. Why BMW even felt the need to spend engineering $ on designing and implementing it is beyond me.
I have volume buttons on my steering wheel, why the hell would I waste my time spinning my finger in the air like an idiot until the gesture system maybe decides to recognize me and turn the volume up/down a bit? Just so so stupid.

Here are some general tips to reduce false laser alerts on radar detectors:

Make sure your radar detector is mounted correctly and securely. Vibration or movement can trigger false alerts.

Check the sensitivity settings on your radar detector. High sensitivity can increase the chances of false alerts, while low sensitivity can cause you to miss legitimate alerts.

Some newer radar detectors have GPS technology that can help filter out false alerts by detecting and filtering out known sources of false alerts such as automatic door openers.

If you have a laser jamming system installed in your car, it may interfere with your radar detector and cause false alerts. In this case, you may need to adjust the settings of the laser jammer or relocate it.

If all else fails, you may need to disable the laser detection on your radar detector or cover up the camera that is causing false alerts. However, as I mentioned earlier, disabling safety features can be dangerous and illegal, so it's important to do so only if it's absolutely necessary and in compliance with the law.

I have V1 Gen 2. I did electrical tape on the gesture control sensors and problem solved! I have it mounted under my rear view mirror.
I would leave Laser on. If the car next to you gets laser I believe it does pick it up. Or like you said maybe an error and gives you time to slam on the brakes. Here in Utah we do see laser from motorcycles when they park.

I did the same tape method last year.

I was told you could just disable rear laser detection for this issue, and keep front laser detection on. Did you find this accurate?

I mounted the V1 to the left of the mirror just outside the range of the gesture control - took a bit of trial and error to find the sweet spot. Benefit is gesture control still works which I like and use and V1 is still fully laser enabled.
Downside is when leaning over across the console it can trigger the V1 Laser b/c of the reflection of the beam off of me- overall a good 95% solution.
