But if what you say is true, then this settlement is great for BMW because the failures occur in 2013s almost exclusively (even though the issue supposedly affects cars into 2015).

So... apparently BMW X3 model years 2013-2015 are made with plastic timing chain guides. Which, of course, plastic gets brittle and breaks.....
I have a 2013 X3 with 62,000 miles on it. In February 2021, I received the "drive train malfunction error". Took it to the dealership and had to have all this work done.... $5500.00 worth of work to replace parts, etc all due to the timing chain guides. 3/11 - less than 600 miles since I picked up my newly repaired car from the dealership - I got the "drive train malfunction" error again... This time it is a Intake cam solenoid. The dealership fixed it, took it for a test drive, and it died on them.... and now I need a new motor My advice is - anyone with a 2013-2015 X3 - GET RID OF THEM NOW!!! My in service date was November 2012 - the malfunction happened February 2021, so I am technically past the 8 years in service date to be considered for the class action lawsuit. If you ask me - this just puts such a blemish on the BMW name and reliability. |

^^ As I said above, you and every other person reporting this failure owns a 2013 despite the years supposedly involved. It will only be stain on BMW for the few people it happened to. Hardly anybody else knows or cares.

Anyone submit their class action paperwork and hear anything back? I have a 2013 X3 that had total engine failure due to timing chain and required engine replacement ($12K). Based on the tables in the settlement agreement i think i'm entitled to a 55% reimbursement from BMW. I submitted my paperwork along with all required maintenance documentation on 6/29/21 and a week or so ago tried to send an email to the company managing disbursements for the law firm (Rust Consulting) and the email (info@timingchainsettlement.com) on the Gelis FAQ website is apparently invalid. it says claims will be paid on a rolling basis and i'm assuming that means after the settlement was finalized on 6/30. Just wondering if anyone has received any reimbursements and if so when you sent your paperwork?

X3 2013 timing chain defect
Hi laportto, Glad I found this site and I can voice my bad experience here. I have exactly the same problem on my car since 2 weeks ago. My car only has 70K km and I got it brand new at May of 2013.
I called both BMW Canada and the dealer. I am still waiting for them to get back to confirm when to tow my car to the dealership. |

I had to literally tell them where to look on the court document, then they said ok you pay 45%. Then gave an estimate (not even a quote) detailing the work) $3k. Ridiculous |

hey, I got a 2013 BMW 52i xdrive back in 2015 and last year I had to pay 10K dollars on timing chain repairs. Please redirect if this is not the right place to post my question.
I submitted docs to https://www.timingchainmodulesettlement.com/ and filled all necessary stuff before the court date etc. But they asked for more detailed docs and re-submitted but delayed by a week(realized this later). Do I still have a chance? or is everything at loss for me? Thanks! |

You are asking a very technical question - whether you submitted your paperwork on time? Is that your question? I doubt many people have paid enough attention to the fine details of the wording of the settlement to be able to answer that, and it may also depend on the specific details - what did you initially send, what did you not send and why did you not send it, is it something that you should have known to send, how long after you were asked for the additional info did you send it, etc. Imagine if you went to a lawyer's office for advice on this, and all you told the lawyer was exactly what is in your post - the lawyer would say "I need to know a lot more."

I submitted the initial documents on time like the original receipt. They asked for a second set of documents more detailed like specific credit card transaction, bank statement, oil change records etc which they didn't ask the first time. I was out of town for 2weeks and it took some time to gather esp oil change receipts
And moreover, the deadline date was on the second page so missed it. |

Has anyone that submitted their paperwork received any compensation from BMW? I submitted mine early 2021 and have yet to receive anything. I emailed the admin in September ‘21 and received a response about a month later. The claim was “preliminarily reviewed and forwarded to BMW for Final Validation. This process can take a minimum of 45-60 days.” Even if it’s 90 days that would be the end of January.
Haven’t heard anything back since so I was just curious if others were more fortunate? Thanks, dr |

BMW fixed the issue in 2015. Newer models didn't have the timing chain issue.
