82 miles a day commute in remapped X3 M40i
I love my X3 and it is the longest I have kept a car in many years … now remapped by DMS and putting out 440hp it is a lovely car to drive.
I’ve got the opportunity of a job but at just over 40miles away. Now 80+ miles a day just commuting with the current UK petrol costs is going to hurt. The car being remapped by DMS , it only takes 99 Ron or I guess will pull timing massively. Do I change car …? …. Put up with fuel costs …. consider removing the remap …. or at least changing it back to my older MG Flasher map which can be set to allow for 95 Ron as opposed to just 99 Ron very easily. I think I can just reflash the MG Flasher software over the DMS map. Is changing the map to one that takes 95 Ron really going to help fuel costs that much ? Is changing car once settled in with the new job excessive and too expensive ? Do I put up with enjoying my car for, say, another year, before changing and just swallow the cost but enjoy the car I still love ? Comments welcome. Btw, the commute is just boring Motorways. |

Logic to buy a more fuel efficient car never made any sense to me. I assume your car is paid off. Paying 50-60k for something more fuel efficient buys a shit load of gas for your current car

I drove exactly 82 daily also! I bought an x3m40i specifically for this commute. I'm all stock and will get around 23mpg but my justification was if I'm going to be sitting there for an hour each way then I'm going to sit in something nice. Something I want to drive and not something I have to drive. Been rocking a commuter Honda long enough. I treated myself and plan to spend 250-300 USD a month in fuel to ride in this beauty.

My Mrs does a 70 mile commute, three days a week. The c. 250 miles per week she is doing is costing about £60/week in petrol unfortunately. We’re less worried about the petrol cost but since December (new delivery) she has already done 3500 miles. But we own it and it’s a keeper hence we picked this model with a full complement of options. If I wanted white-goods utility type motoring then of course we could have gone for something else. But cars are there to be driven and as long as we look after it etc then it’s the cost of transport nowadays. |

Good point. Yes, it is all paid for so a new *something* = cost before anything even gets put in the fuel tank.

The cheapest vehicle to own, is the one you already have.
Just keep it. You like the car. Do you really want to be sitting in a KIA or Honda (as good as those cars are) for 82 miles instead of your BMW? All highway you should get better mileage. If a new job, cost of commute should be a factor when talking compensation. For me - YOLO. I used to think that baby my garage queens and driving beater cars was the way to go. My mind has changed - if you enjoy cars and driving, it is worth it to me to drive the car I actually like and not treat it as it is some classic Ferrari or something.

I get this ... and the wait time for anything seems to be a year too ! Everything EV / Hybrid bar a Tesla is a lot slower ... especially when you factor in a decent remap which mine has.

Can you not consider purchasing a cheap run around for work to keep the miles off the X3?

My train of thought is yes I know mileage is a thing but a car these days is used as a tool to make income, its not gonna appreciate like we own a highly sought after high end sports car.(even though there is a chip shortage and drove the car market prices sky high for used). If OP said I found a new job but I'm gonna drive my 20 year old Ferrari taken out from storage with less than 200 miles to go 80 miles a day round trip for work, then yes please buy a shitbox to take. Just saying. |

I’d be looking to purchase another car for work only but I do appreciate what you said, if you’re doing those sort of miles then doing it in comfort will make a difference. |

During my day job I spend a significant amount of time around the oil & gas sector. IMO oil & gas prices are going much higher for longer than any of us would like. You can buy yourself XLE which is a basket of large oil and gas companies. Will provide a good hedge. If you are exposed to nat gas buy XOP.
