It didn't hurt that Rolex couldn't really sell these watches when they were new.
He ended up getting a deal on the watch at the time since it was just sitting at the dealer for a while. I think he said around $300.
I was literally the only person in our family that even remotely liked watches and I would talk to him often about them. I don't ever remember him wearing it, but he showed it to me often and it was just kept in the safe.
I was shocked when he willed it to me. The ironic thing is, no one in the family even knows how much it's really worth. They just think it's a Rolex so it's expensive, they just don't know how much.
Now it's insured for about as much as my house replacement LOL! It's no leaving my wrist anytime soon either.
That's an awesome story, and it's great to see that you're keeping it in the family - and putting it to use. It's just going to continue to go up in value really.

I as well. I've (almost) bit the bullet a handful of times, but never on a Rolex. They just don't interest me (personally I mean).

I'd prefer a Jaeger Lecoultre Master Compressor Diving Chrono… or maybe a very classic looking Zenith.

I love watches. Started my collection very recently with a Rado Centrix and a Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 16. Alternate between a Tissot PRS 516 and Apple Watch Series 7 for daily. Looking to pickup a Longines Legend Diver soon.

The Paul Newman is a classic. I had a second generation Daytona that I bought in the mid seventies that I wish I had not sold. My daily driver.

I originally had bought that watch for my dad who was an Airforce pilot. When a limited edition of the AVRO Arrow Anniversary was advertised by the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Museum, I managed to snap one but my example came with a cheesy rubber strap instead of a bracelet. So I replaced it with a nice leather one.

It is powered by a Seiko AGS kinetic mvt. When you shake it side to side it makes its own electricity stored in a small capacitor.

Some nice watches. I have been a fan of watches, but never had the pleasure of owning and keeping a top of the line watch.

Before I went smart watch, I had a one that was given to me by work. It was special because it was an award not handed out very often. As smart watches came along, I went with a Garmin Forerunner. Great battery, features and tracking.

As my job changed, I found that I needed a watch that was really good about giving me quick access to messages. I tried the Tag Heuer Connected. Looked nice, but was not great for my workout sessions. Finally wound up with what I think is the most boring watch in the world. An Apple Watch. So plain to look at. So plain at what it is, but...it does do a good job of notifying me and letting me read enough to tell if I have further action.

What a great story behind a beautiful watch. Wear it and enjoy a truly classic watch.

Apparently Paul Newman gave his to his daughter’s boyfriend.

I have a Garmin Fenix as well for workouts. I love the battery life and all the statistics so I can track how hard I'm working.

I followed that pre-sale/story of Paul Newman's watch. My daughter and I watched the auction live. It was super exciting. My personal preference is the exotic dial, however, I prefer the screw down pushers.

I have the first reinvention of the Longines Legend Diver, in stainless steel with the marine -strap and the date complication, from about 5/6 years ago. A great watch which can be both 'sporty' and smart.

Tend to wear a regular Oris as the daily 'desk diver'….

I've been retired for quite a while and rarely wear any of my watches anymore. However, this thread prompted me to dig out my high school graduation watch that my mom and dad gave me. It's a gold Bulova self-winding watch. I put it on, and it still works. I wore it as a young guy, 4 years in the military and a few years afterwards. It got knocked around quite a bit. It's from 1962! Good times.

I'm pretty straightforward here - my daily driver is my Apple Watch Series 4 (with BMW M Sport band), which I'm planning on upgrading to the Series 8 when that's released later this year.

My other watch is a Tag Heuer Formula 1. I've had that for almost 15 years now, and love it. I tend to wear it more at the weekends, and when going out, etc. Here they are:
