You want add some power?

Some context: I've bought only suvs since 2010 because my roads are terrible. My X3m40i was built 3/19, purchased 11/19 with close to 8k miles on it. Prior owner was a BMW employee. Love at first test drive. I left behind a stock 2015 jeep srt, my second jeep in a row, because an issue with some carbon fiber trim pissed me off. We are who we are, ok. I thought I could easily squeeze just a little more out of the X3 and figured this would be easy because it's turbocharged. I knew not much else about it. Confident then, and now, this will be my last ICE vehicle. 2019 me sound like you? This is meant to help you out. It might not.

Like so many other new bmw owners, I dreaded the thought of reliability issues out of warranty. Then came the lockdowns and the only thing going on was youtube and forum lurking. I first wanted and tried my best to be satisfied with a Dinan tune from my dealership. I was absolutely 100% not satisfied. I honestly believe you're never gaining 70 or even 20 horses from a Dinan tune on a first generation B58 producing 365hp from the factory, even if your dealer managed to successfully flash it to your DME. Multiple B58 generations, configurations, and states of tune in different vehicles had also muddied the waters back in 2020 when I tried doing that. Making matters worse, the X3 and SUVs in general just aren’t any tuner's focus. As far as DME unlocking goes, if yours cannot be unlocked right now it will be later at some point so you might as well get ready for that.

You want noticeably more power? You need to ask yourself only 2 questions. First, can you sleep at night without a BMW engine warranty? If not, stop reading and consider trading in for something with more power from the factory. That is a fine choice. Still reading? Will everything be ok? Most probably. Now ask yourself how much you want to spend because everyone wants all the oomph they can get and become accustomed to each increase in power: faster will become slow again while completely aware you're already stupidly fast. You just got another warning.

So you want to spend less than $1000? You might, at first. Get an off the shelf (OTS) tune on whichever platform is the first step. I chose mhd but there are 3 or 4 big names that compete and offer pretty much the same so you don’t need to overthink. Get the corresponding wireless flashing adapter. Each platform has its pros and cons so choose whatever you like or whatever your local shop and tuner use the most. If custom tuning on a dyno might be happening to you later figure out where that will happen now, and ask them what they like. Also, xHP is a transmission tune. Buy it. It brings noticeable differences.

Still wanting more? Then you will need to buy some hardware and it all begins with a downpipe. An OTS tune and a downpipe still not enough for you? Then you will need to turn to fueling. If you have a first gen B58 ('18 and '19 model years in the US) you're going to want an upgraded high pressure fuel pump fuel pump (hpfp). The cost is can be anywhere from $400 to $1900, without labor. I've had a great experience with dorch engineering's products and support. Yes, I've heard of others also being good.

The upgraded fuel pump will enable running off the shelf ethanol blend tunes. They bring a considerable increase in power to the table. Nowadays, you also have access to flex fuel kits with off the shelf flex fuel tunes. These kits are extremely convenient and make the pump more 'worth getting' than it already was. With some luck you might have kept everything under three thousand dollars and be able approach 420 to 500 horses at the wheels, depending on how much ethanol you blend with your gasoline. This is also where most people will and should call it a day because of cost and complexity: tunes + downpipe + hpfp (for gen1) and a flexfuel kit. I have a dorch flex fuel kit.

Still not enough for you? Ok. I'll have you know you will be shopping for an aftermarket turbo and I hope you chose a formidable $1700 hpfp or had planned to add port injection to your direct injected vehicle. This is also where gen2 B58 ('20 and onwards) must consider adding port injection, as I'm not aware of any aftermarket HPFPs supporting their required line pressure. There are so many turbo setups, tuners, options and opinions that continuing any further is far beyond the scope this very basic welcoming to the party, but your budget now needs to be a multiple of that required for the setup I outlined in the last paragraph. I chose a DAW Flowmax + turbo. I have a custom flex fuel tune. I've had no reliability issues this far. Enjoy the ride.

Here are some pictures. It’s all go, no show. Believe me, it’s all in there.

LOL, I'm going through this now in my 22 M40i and was concerned about the warranty in the long run. That thought has left the building and enjoying my ride even more after upgrading some parts.

Thanks. I just recently bought a dragy. Where did you place the adhesive backed plate? Behind the screen? I plan to add clean data for 93oct and E50 within a month.

Much appreciated thread/post. This forum doesn’t have much detail into mods, especially into the depth that you have gone on the platform.

I place it on that top grille or speaker right in front of the windshield it seems to hold good there and not move much looking forward to your results

Exactly!! Mine started with "I'm just going to do a few things…." Several mods later, I'm still thinking "what can I do next" 😂😂😂😂

I'm about maxed on what I can do performance wise (for now) on my 2021, so I'm looking at a few tasteful exterior/interior upgrades next. If it's not one thing, it's another.

And I completely agree, f!@# the warranty

Due to the event type, track length and my general inexperience I can only bring 40-100 and 40-110. Heat was nasty. Tank nearly full of E50. I logged all passes and will add that once I upload. First pass is missing.

data for last 3. Got some noticeable throttle interventions. Going to have someone who knows better than me look at it.

boost target drop

If anyone could enlighten me as to why boost target would suddenly drop from 24psi to 10 at wot doing 100mph and torque limiter 262144 is present would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm I never saw anyone try to measure 40-100. I assume your times are fast with your mods. But no idea. Lol

Sorry I wasn’t trying to measure 40-100 and 4-110 nor ask if I’m fast -was the slowest or second slowest bmw at this event. Just offering the data that I was able to get for whoever might want it. I don’t have access to an autobahn, cant ‘drive to Mexico’, and in general just have things to lose. 130 wasn’t in the cards for me this day. Maybe there’s a tuning or hardware issue somewhere but who knows. It is what it is.

And I thought I was the only maniac in Puerto Rico that was going to tune an X3 (non M/MC). Complety missed the post with the helmet and Bimmer card. Props for putting numbers on the board, the heat yesterday was awful and in Salinas I couldn't imagine.

You are not alone! And hiding numbers wont change them lol. Maybe someone wants the boost and wgdc data no matter how shitty the pass.
