I did end up going through the dealer, primarily because I have a good relationship with my sales advisor and she hooked me up almost same day since they had a windshield in stock. They did do some calibration on it, and of course all checked out ok. I have no issues to report and everything is as expected. The glass has the BMW stamp on it.

Previously, I have used Safelite on an older range rover of mine, and they used "OEM" glass. It was from Pilkington, which I think BMW uses as well) but did not have the OEM Land Rover markings on it. I would have gone for that option, but the convenience for me at the time made it an easy choice.

I am not risking it, so opted to go to dealer to get it done and calibrated properly.
My insurance company assured me that it will be covered under comprehensive coverage.

I think i win for the size of the rock

The state farm coverage will be from comprehensive choose any place/material (go with OEM obviously), if any positive from this experience, $0 deductible and was assured that the comprehensive claim will not affect the premium/rate.

Now choosing which shop (dealer here subs out to 3rd party) is more OCD than i am.

Safelite does have the lifetime warranty.

I had such bad experiences with safelite (broken clips, forgetting to connect stuff).

Unfortunately with my insurance it seems they only cover OEM glass for a short period of ownership (2 years?).

Fortunately I have only had one rock chip (so far) which I fixed with the glass repair kit. Hasn’t spidered but it was small.

Hi all.

My windshield got smashed (vandalism) and glass entered the cabin. Obviously, I need a new OEM windshield and not going the Safelite route due to HUD.

But here's the kicker. A few places (including indies and one dealership of three), said the dash needs to be removed to clean up shards in the vents/AC system. Is this correct and mandatory, or is it a bogus charge to up the bill? Cost for dash removal around $3k in SoCal.

Does anyone here have similar experiences?

Thanks so much in advance.

Not like he can really go anywhere as it was a long procession of cars going at safe speeds for the conditions. Grrrrrrrr... can't express my frustration enough but I digress...

In any case, has anyone had their windshield replaced and have some advice? I don't want to get one of the Japanese windshield replacements that come from Safelite or similar, but rather as close to OEM as possible. Any recommendations?
In my opinion, you must use laminated glass for windshields. More and more companies are starting to use laminated glass for side and rear windows. The combination of laminated and tempered glass is certainly possible but very difficult. And if you are from San Diego then I recommend you to contact with Cali Glass N Tint. They have high-quality windshields.

Dealer only way to go! Safelite sucks! Demand your insurance to approve the work to be done by the dealer. I did and had to pay the dealer up front and submit for reimbursement.

Penske has a shop at the autoplex where my BMW is located in Phoenix. I had mine replaced once and got another crack last week. USAA insurance is great if you have that option. Their coverage covers the sensor alignment and OEM glass for the first few years at zero cost. Penske is waiting on the OEM glass to arrive.

Somewhat related to this post. Recommend STEK dynoflex windshield film. Have it for 7K miles/7 months and been a pretty good protection. Cost me about $450 installed. Not much cloudiness on vision of sight compared to other films because thickness is between a PPF and a tint so install is easier on glass. Do notice minor scratches now that are visible during the morninng and evening sun light angle. Saw 3-4 small nicks on it from rock hits which I don't think made it to the glass surface. My previous car's windshield didn't have a crack but so many small glass chips that made glass look terrible. Most likely will replace this film every 2-3 years as it wears out.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble with your windshield. From what you've described, it sounds like it may be time for a replacement. Depending on the severity of the damage, a replacement may be the best option for you.

One thing to keep in mind is that there are a number of different types of windshields available on the market today. Some are made from plastic and others are made from glass. Each has its own set of benefits and drawbacks. It's important to choose the type of windshield that is best suited for your needs.

I’ve noticed a bunch of small nicks in mine and have been looking for options other than replacing the whole windshield. When you had yours installed did it mask the pre-existing nicks or make them more visible?

Had it installed first week of picking it up new from the dealership so pre-existing nicks do not apply in my case. if you have few nicks it could protect from future ones and also from major rock hit causing a crack to replace the windshield.

We’ll it happened to me after about 8 months of ownership. Tire punctures and windshield rock chips seem to gravitate toward both my cars and my wife’s as well. In 8 months of ownership I’ve had 2 screws in tires and now a baseball sized spot on my windshield.

Long story short was driving past someone at about 25-30mph that was weed eating and sure enough a big rock flew up and nailed my windshield. Glad it didn’t hit the body due to the size!

I’ve got quotes all across the board for replacement. I do not have HUD or the traffic assist so really nothing special here.

Calling insurance company tomorrow to see if they’ll allow me to go to BMW.

$550
Glas Tek - local company I’ve used for repairing chips in the past as well as 1 full replacement. Never had a problem so I’ve kept going back.

$850
Safelite

Mine has been replaced 3 times! Dealer is the only way to go. My insurance made me pay for it upfront and submit for reimbursement so that’s what I would do.

Just FYI the dealership 90% of the time just sources it out to a local shop. find out who that is and take it yoruself. I save 50% this way, plus the dealer never warranties this work they say "their" shop does. Which is Jeffs Auto Glass....

My local dealership quoted me more than $4k to replace and recalibrate my rock chipped and cracked windshield. Fuck that noise. I ended up going with safelite through my insurance. It was a $500 deductible. Took less than two hours and it was done. I'm completely satisfied. I hate dealerships...

I thought about it more so to check the body/paint because I was worried it didn’t just catch the glass. However, I didn’t have a great spot to pull in and was about to get on the highway.

My comprehensive deductible is only $250 so I’m going to my dealer.

Here in SC for whatever reason, all insurance companies replace windshields free of charge(IE-no deductible) if you have comprehensive coverage on your policy, which I think almost all new car owners have(or should)..Safelite replaced mine last month with BMW OEM glass but the tech sucked and damaged the rain sensor without telling me. I played stupid and went to the dealer after I realized the wipers were acting up. Didn't ask if the glass was just replaced so I didn't tell. Cost me $0 and $0 to have both fixed.

Worked out great,I got the M8 Comp I usually get as a loaner for 3 days while they ordered the part from Germany.
