it all depends on how you use your car. my car does 6k ish a year. I manage just fine over the winter on my UHP tyres. Deffo not going to waste my time or money on winter tyres when infact we ony ever get a mild winter in the UK. if on the other hand I had to commute for work it might be a different story. Sliding about is all part of the fun

Aside from the safety concern. HP summer tire compounds can be damaged by cold temps... the compound can crack. Thus failure in warmer months can be attributed to fatigue/damage sustained in winter months.

Completely agree. It is odd. As you say, plenty spend mega cash on sticky summers for at times not the highest performance cars/SUV's and actually many get quite funny saying you don't nerd winters, waste of money.

Funny enough we had a couple inches snow the day after I fitted my winters. Obviously no issues getting around or traction light.

I didn't spend any money on tyres they came with the car and can't see the point on wasting money on winter tyres when we only get 2 days snow a year

Good for you, as obviously winter tyres are ONLY for snow.

That's how you get the siping needed for winter grip*

*NOTE FOR ALL: this is absolutely a joke - using HP summer tires below 40^F will probably get you seriously injured or killed.
given some of the tire posts over the years, I felt obligated to point this out as it may not be obvious to some ... which kinda ruins the humor, but I accept the World we live in.

You and the other 99% running on summer tyres are wrong too

I like you (and the 99%) will drive through winter in summer tyres, but unlike the idiots that cause chaos will 1) choose when and when not to drive in bad freezing weather and 2) when I do drive, drive to the conditions.

Both (1) and (2) cause the sh1t we have to out up with in the UK.

Having said all that, if I lived in an area in the UK that suffered from bad snow and non-salted roads I would have winters.

I'm a fan of winter tyres, for me it's a risk reward analysis.

If I had all season tyres I may take that risk but not with summers.

I am used to being wrong, my wife tells me that all the time

I agree, if I had to commute or deal with poor conditions I would consider winter tyres, but as I don't why would I waste my money??

I come on here for a bit of banter and share info, but people get so high and mighty on their keyboards it's depressing. No-one would speak like this face to face so why be do nasty and belittling on forums. Really sad.

This should be s nice place to share

Anyway let the snow roll in so I can have some fun on my summer tyres

For clarity moff, not having a go at you. I like your style and agree

It’s a difficult one.
I live on NE Scotland coast and we don’t get much snow (or indeed that low temps).

Back in Dec 2010 we got bad snow/ice and I slid my new 325i into kerb buckling wheel. So i spent £800 and bought winter tyres and religiously swapped them every 6 months for the next 3 years - but the winters were mild so never needed to.

Then I got a new F10 M5 and splashed £3.7k on winter wheels- that was followed by the mildest winters you can imagine - zero snow.

Three years later got M3 and never bothered with winters - just used daughter’s fiesta on the 2 occasions it snowed.

This week took delivery on a X3M and won’t bother with winters.

So the decision may be easy for those who are guaranteed to get bad winter conditions but for some it’s marginal.

Does not matter what tyres you have if you hit black ice your not going to control it. Summer tyres as folk call it are dry wet tyres. It’s obvious if you live in a area where winters are winters you would be using snow chains/ studded tyres if your expecting deep snow every year.

I recently bought a winter wheel pkg for my new X4, so rest assured it will be a very mild winter in the UK. You can thank me later for taking one for the team...

I am the same as you. I work from home. If the car goes out it is on well gritted suburban roads for a short trip to the shops. I don't go hooning around B roads in poor weather, and I don't have massive commutes. If there's snow, I leave the car at home or take the wife's Mini. I'll do at most 500 miles over the winter. We've managed to drive carefully in winter for the past 30 years on regular tires.

I'm not knocking folk who spend money on spare wheels and winter tyres, but I don't have the budget for that, and I don't do the mileage to justify it. I'm sure it's the best option if the costs can be justified. I'd rather walk than waste £1000 on tires for a few weeks.
