Not had this issue; trans in neutral and sound goes away would point to drivetrain/driveline issue...hard to say, could be anything from transmission to u-joint, bushing, etc.

Would seem car needs to be put on lift for diagnosis.

Is the fan running when you hear the noise? My fan (at high speed) makes a whirring sound

I posted this awhile ago and still have the sound. Good news is that it likely means your trans is not likely to explode. Note my use of "likely"

I suspect it has something with the fluid level in the transmission. I am going to be changing my transmission fluid next week. I will update if it solves my issue or if it doesn't.

I started noticing some new sound maybe like the one described here in the past 3 days. The sound is tied to the engine's RPMs and can only be heard at very low speed.

I changed my transmission oil roughly a month ago at a ZF certified mechanic. Transmission is acting great other than that.

Try turning A/C off, and wait a bit and see if it goes away. I get some whirring-like noise when mine is engaged. I can only hear it when driving slowly as other regular noises mask it once doing even city speeds. I ignore the noise. Just did a serpentine belt change and the compressor bearing seemed OK.

How much fluid does it take to fill, did you change the plastic pan ?
