My brother previously went here for a quote, he has a X3 30i and these scumbags wanted $2,800 for brakes and the transmission service.

I did have to depend on BMW NA to step in and arbitrate with the local service department because they keep insisting the side door molding fit/finish was "normal". NOT !!!
Longer story short, would not hurt to call BMW, and they will respond and act as owner advocate, at least they did for my issue, "Our BMW Customer Relations and Services team is here for you at 1-800-831-1117 Monday through Thursday from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. Eastern Time, and Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. Eastern Time." Wouldn't hurt. |

I posted a stealership Google review a few days ago, referencing this thread.

I don't agree with blasting them after you agreed to have the work done. That's on you and not them. They're shady, for sure. But you didn't have to use them. You made a mistake and move on.

So it's ok for BMW to take advantage of a customer and over charge them for service? So the mistake to trust BMW?

I'm not defending the dealer here and as indicated by my signature have had a lot of experience with dealers and indy repair places over the years. My feeling is if you are the type that appreciates driving a BMW you should know you are going to pay higher than normal service fees if you go to a dealership for service. You need to make a decision if the extra cost vs an indy is worth it. This was a learning experience for the OP.....so he spent more money than he wanted but his vehicle is totally serviced. Trashing the dealer after the fact simply based on pricing in my opinion is not professional. Quality of work would be another issue. In today's environment, you could spend all day finding cases of ridiculous pricing for goods and services. I'd suggest to the OP taking the bill to the service manager and try to negotiate a discount (or maybe a couple free future oil changes) saying he didn't realize the total and would have eliminated some of the service if he had paid more attention. Just my opinion here. Good discussion and learning moment.

I am all for building relations. My last VW service shop in Evanston, IL was a great place. I guess they recognized customer relation better than this BMW service place I just went to. Its a 'live and learn' moment for me. I am not dissing based on cost its based on what I said here. Using Condition based service as an excuse to make money of me thats not morally right. But I am the dummy who paid that amount. I dont think I am heading to these people for anything. As far as keeping the car in its best running shape. Now I'll enthusiastically do it rather than delegating stuff. This is a learn from my mistake post anyway. |

There are "required" services (CBS related, oil change, brake fluid, brakes) and then "dealer recommended services" (fuel injection service, coolant flush [depends on quality of fluid], trans fluid replacement, diff fluid, transfer case fluid).
These are very different things. |

When I lived in NYC, I drove 1.5hrs to an Indie shop in LI (who worked as Head Tech of Audi) to service my B8. Actually drove with 2 cars since I was leaving my A4 for a week or so to do the work. Saved me mega buck$ (like 1500-2000) so I thought it was worth it. IMHO, 1-2hrs of driving to save $hundreds is worth it. Buy all the parts online & have Indi do the labor- win/win!

Personally, I only go to dealership if I feel like spending money...if I want to save a few hundreds or thousands, I would just DIY or go for an indi shop. Service quality is another topic and everyone has different standard. Some just want the work to be done while some might want world class service.
I don't think there's right or wrong answer here, it all depends. When one has a solid financial background that $5k is just so small for he or she, then of course, he or she might just go to dealership and not caring too much about what's in the bill. Every place has specific audience and target customers in my opinion.

There is a flawed perception that bringing a car to a stealership means getting the best quality service. Wrong, wrong and wrong. You’ll always do better either DIY or with a highly-rated Indy.
