"Engine Sound" Setting 2020 m40i

Does changing the engine sound to reduced affect performance or does it only change the noise played by the speakers? TIA

Affecting power? Hard to say without dyno runs, but yes, it probably affects power.

ASD (Audio Sound Design) is BMW' solution to a sports car that's too quiet. Changing the Engine Sound under Car Settings does affect this, but doesn't seem to turn it all the way off. I say this as latest BimmerCode allows you to fully disable, and disabled, it definitely seems quieter. I love BimmerCode and love the ability to turn ASD completely off.

The Engine sound also affects physical exhaust. Most know about the flapper valve - a solenoid that actuates a butterfly valve that can disable flow to the driver's side muffler. It seems it may be able to do this in degrees - some partial open state - though I may well be imagining the variance in noice. Regardless, in generally, a less free flowing exhaust will negatively impact performance.

I would hazard against just setting valve fully open. I have the JB4+ which allows me to force valve open by holding the BC button on blinker stalk - so at will any time. On the 2018/19, there was a bit of engine drown at freeway speeds. Not a ton, but some. If you enjoy a quiet ride, you may be unhappy with the extra drone.

A note on noise regarding the MY2020 vs 2018/19.

Several have noted, and I must concur, that the 2020 does not pop and gurgle as much as the previous 2018/19's did. As I understand it, the gurgle and pops are produced by dumping a bit extra fuel in exhaust. Perhaps they are stopping spark on one or more cylinders so that the fuel rich air hits the exhaust manifold and combusts there for the pops. I read one article suggesting this could help keep turbo spooled up for better performance. I suspect it's 90%+ for Race Boy sounds.. which I love. Regardless, it sounds less fuel efficient and I suspect, esp. with higher output engine, BMW chose to lessen for better fuel economy. Also, as much as I love the pops, gurgles and farts, I know there are some BMW drivers that did not appreciate the noise.

Embarrassed to ask, but where is this setting in iDrive?

I'm guessing its in sport profile configuration? That'd explain why I haven't seen it anywhere. I'm still in break-in period and just easing it around town in COMFORT.

I agree with this 100%. My thought is that the burble tuning (extra fuel on overrun) got tuned out both for MPG and the new super tough global emissions testing.

--The feature also helps as a form of anti-lag, as you mentioned.

I have it as well. Once my car is broken in, I'm definitely going to play around with the sound modes to see how much of a difference they make. If anyone else can chime in with their experiences between the different sound modes, I'd be interested to hear your feedback. For now, I'm going to keep it on "based on drive mode" setting

You can change it now if you want. It changes the interior engine sound based on the option chosen. Also changes the exhaust flap on the exhaust to with option chosen. For example sport would leave the valve open (mostly open) and reduced would keep it closed

Does this setting affect the sound at start up or only while driving?

With regard to the crackles and pops. Usually it is achieved by playing with the fuel and spark timing. When you come off throttle they throw a little bit of fuel in and ignite during the downstroke. So yes it’s pretty much just a waste of fuel, and yes it would tend to keep the turbo spooled up a bit. I think there is a misconception that fuel is just thrown in the exhaust..it’s sort of true since the fueling and spark comes during the traditional exhaust phase, but is more just an extension of the variable timing

Yes, a 2020 X3 m40i. Under 'general settings' I have tried to post a photo but can't for some reason.

It's great that you love your car. I love the M40i too. Super awesome car. Glad to see you got it loaded!

Do you really park it in the pole barn?!

No 'engine sound' in vehicle settings.

No 'General settings' anywhere.
