This plain chrome tips weren’t cutting it for me, so I’ve once again changed them out with some tips that have the Blue Burnt look, and I think it adds a nice touch.

I found a phenomenal exhaust shop in the South Florida area with “real” fabricators and welders that can think outside the box.

Additionally, they’re very knowledgeable about exhaust systems and offered to change out my entire exhaust (between the DP and Tips) with 3-inch pipes to get more flow and help improve the sound and performance. Price: $700-$900

No way I can say No to that kind of low pricing - so I will be doing that soon and I’ll post photos and a video of the results.

But for now - here’s a look at my new Blue Burnt tips…

My two cents as follows:

MSRP on X3 M40i: $60,000 (382 HP | 4.4 sec 0-60)
MSRP on X3 M: $73,000 (473 HP | 3.9 sec 0-60)

$13,000 Difference (That's a lot of cash to me)

I leased a 2020 BMW X3 M40i which I recently converted to a lease buyout, since I love the car so much, and obviously, with the car market the way it is, I have tons of positive equity.

After I officially owned the car, I started tinkering with some low-cost upgrades that would result in as much power and speed gains as reasonably possible.

So far, I've done the following:
  • VRSF High Flow Catted Downpipe
    BMS Performance Billet Intake
bootmod3 OTS Stage 2 E30 Octane (Engine Tune)
xHP OTS Stage 3 (Transmission Tune)

Doing just those 4 mods has transformed this vehicle into a whole other experience, giving me:
  • 500+ HP
    0-60: 3.3 sec
    1/4 Mile: 10.9 sec

I use Dragy (like everyone else) to calculate those times. I don't have the exact HP number right now, because I haven't had a Dyno session since installing bm3 Stage 1 - I was at 425 HP at that point.

I know Sport Displays aren't accurate, but I can tell you that I max out the HP gauge, which my tuner set to 560 max. I seriously doubt I have 560 HP right now, but I know I'm 500+. I need to get back on the Dyno to see the current numbers - I'm just waiting for availability right now, but I will report back.

To sum all this up, I would estimate my total high-performance upgrade investments to be around $2500-$3000 total. So, for less than $3k, and only 2 bolt-ons, I was able to increase the power of this M40i to the point that it will blow the doors off any stock X3 M - and I'm still on the stock turbo!!

To me, this sounds like a no-brainer if you're looking for luxury + performance. I just saved myself $10k.

Bottom line - If I'm running low 3's and high 10's, damn straight I'm putting Quad-Tips on my M40i. I do not try to hide the fact that it's an M40i, quite the opposite. I'm proud that it's an M40i and I saved $10k.

I'm not trying to make my car look like a true M car, I'm simply trying to improve both the look and performance of my $65k luxury BMW. To say that quad-tips are "reserved" for some other car is ridiculous. That would be like saying, I shouldn't take advantage of my B58 and increase the power of it because extra power is reserved for a true M car lol.

The fact is, the B58 is a monster and is capable of big, big power, and we have the right to take advantage of it.

Your car is your car - You're free to do with it whatever your heart desires.

Maybe someday I'll buy a true M car when I have the budget for it, but as of right now - I'm absolutely in love with my X3 M40i - it's a total beast with my current upgrades. I can't imagine what it will feel like when I eventually upgrade the Turbo and HPFP.
So treu bro just enjoy it its yours

Yeaaa. Quad tips are not reserved for Ms. The M badges however,,they belong on a M. Nothing wrong IMO with putting on quad tips bc they def look better. Why not add a carbon splitter and the whole carbon package? If it looks good, do it. Except fake badges. That’s for posers.

Doing a bunch of mods and leaving the M40i badge on is killer. Will surprise a bunch of Ms, even the tuned ones (myself included)

What shop? I’ve used g exhaust before as well but I prefer my guys at American muffler. They are the best welding exhaust guys I’ve ever seen. Also, what is the diameter of the stock pipes ? I might do like you but with vibrants or mini bullets, just need to know the size of the inlet outlet. What did they do with the actuator for the valve? Did you ever remove the resonator in the middle and if so is it better or worse? Thanks

and while on subject and I try to figure out what to do with this exhaust, I might want to grab some quad tips since they're going to have to re do that whole muffler section anyhow... anyone have a link to some good ones that fit/offset correctly? maybe it doesn't matter if I remove the muffler since there will be room. also anyone know what happens to the valve in this scenario? I think I'll install some vibrants or mini bullets back there just curious what they do with the valve

If it's a good shop they could cut the flange flap section and weld it to the new pipes or if you don't want to use the flap, zip tie the flap motor somewhere underneath and leave it plugged in as you don't want a CEL to turn on.

gotcha... that makes sense... what would you do here in my scenario? even though I hate to chop everything up down there, I think leaving the mid resonator since it's mostly open anyhow, and just remove back muffler and install either vibrants or mini bullets maybe with some quad tips since they'll now fit or made to fit with the new pipes... just worried as I don't want obnoxious sound lol.... i want it to sound like my m340 does with the MPE. lol

maybe it's best to reinstall it that way I can close it if I want some quiet? LOL then again I want it open at start up and it's open all the time now ... maybe just zip tie it like you said and leave it tucked away somewhere lol

wow... seems like a lot of work... isn't gutting the muffler the same as just removing/replacing it? how do you compare your first install vs the RES sound wise?

I guess the million dollar question, is it worth spending a considerable amount more? I assume the RES is around 3k or so? do you have a DP with the RES or just RES?

At first it was important too me to keep it stock looking, so gutting it was the way.
Res is so much cleaner sound and not as raspy. But I found res afterwards so I would have gone with the complete exhaust first. Yes I have a AA catted dp. The pricing for the exhaust is in the res thread, they have it in SS or titanium.
