2020 X3M competition or Range Rover Sport V8? Curious what BMW fans would pick

After leasing 3 cars from BMWNA, I was about to upgrade to the 2020 X3M competition, coming from a 2017 X3 35i which I was very happy in, so happy I thought upgrading to it's most powerful engine was the next best step for me.

But I heard that voice inside me telling me to try something different, life is short, etc, so I ventured out and test drove other brands. After a month or two of tests drives and negotiations, I did a complete U-turn and ended up getting a 2020 RR sport V8.

I can honestly say the X3 is better in every regard, other than overall looks and off road capabilities. The driving mechanics, gearbox, speed, infotainment system, even down to the key fob, all feel better on the BMW.

I'm curious to see what others think, which car would you choose if the payments were roughly similar? Would you take the speed of the X3m comp, even if it's not the most aesthetically pleasing car in your eyes, or a RR sport V8, which is still fast enough, but clearly slower than the X3?

Looks of course are subjective and I think the RR certainly has a more off road look and if that’s what’s appealing to you congrats! Personally would not take a $70k vehicle off-road but I am fortunate to have an older built up 4runner that serves that purpose for me. So to each their own, I get nervous enough parking at the local grocery store and getting a scratch can’t image tree branches etc rubbing against my x3m!

No one takes a RR off road. It's a Whole Foods parking lot car.

Too unreliable wouldn't touch JLR with a barge pole and I can't afford them to boot even if I did fancy one quality on RR seems good but cheap ass from what I have seen on others vehicles in the group. Perhaps more Jag to be fair.

FWIW. We didnt even test drive a RR LR after seeing the fit and finish of the car and sitting in it in the show room floor there was no comparison.

I think for accurate results, you will require a fair degree of forum bias correction.....

2 very different vehicles, IMO.

Two very different vehicles. Your particular RR competes with the X5 M50i. My wife drives the base V6 RR Sport and it's very nice and comfy.

The wife had RR Sport 2018 and the Ride was nice but not Sport like M SUV. The service was horrible and the Engine malfunctioned twice. We traded it in for G05 2019 and now X4M.

I really like the look of it, but the driving experience was lacking.

It looks great, enjoy.

Did you look at the Jaguar SVR? That's a sweet looking SUV with a proper V8.

The Range Rovers are absolutely gorgeous, and every time I see one drive by, I absolutely lust after one. Then reality comes flying back and I'm reminded how horrible Land Rover's reliability is.

Really do hope you enjoy your new RR, though!

Reliability is an even bigger issue.

I do like RR what I don’t like is the horror stories of the reliability of the air suspension.

Ive had a couple of RRS v6 though not the v8 and enjoyed them very comfy but never looked forward to actually going out and driving them in fact my second one I hardly bothered and only had 1500 miles on when I sold it .
Think the x3m makes me look forward to getting in it or even make an excuse just to drive it . just like I did with my M3
But as said very different cars I never had any problems with either of my RRS and dealer was also pretty good so enjoy still a good choice in my opinion.

Thanks everyone. Honestly, I'm not surprised at the poll results. The X3MC is a fantastic car and I'm just happy the X3 has finally entered the M division. About time! I will definitely keep an eye on the next iteration of it.

I've also read many horror stories about LR quality control and how things tend to start falling apart after a while. Fingers crossed I don't encounter too many issues in the future, and I have a LR service center 5 minutes away from me so here's hoping I only see them for regular services.

My family all do love (and prefer) the new RR Sport, from young kids to oldies, they all think it's just much more luxurious and stylish than the X3, which I agree with but honestly that's where the advantages end for me. The way the RRS looks and the V8 sound, other than that everything goes to the X3MC. The X3 even has a bigger boot believe it or not lol.

It just goes to show that nothing is perfect in life. I used to look at RR sports and think wow, they look like the nicest SUVs ever. Then you drive one, the latest model out there, and realize that BMW are so far ahead in many departments. It really makes you appreciate the iDrive system when you step in to another car.

I've also found myself really enjoying driving again. For the first time in years I went for a late night drive the other night. No music. Windows down a little just to hear the V8 burbles, and one important pro of the RRS is that actually driving and steering feel amazing, which I had heard in many reviews leading up to the car arriving and it turns out it's true. The steering is so good and accurate it kind of surprises you at first. I didn't think any SUV would feel as good as the X3 but the RRS feels just as good. Cornering, city traffic, everything handling feels really good, which makes driving more fun.

Stunning car enjoy i think if my RRS was the V8 it would have made a massive difference to my enjoyment they are great looking cars with fantastic interiors and a bit more special with the V8 power and V8 sound .

I can't deny they are attractive looking vehicles but Range Rovers are pretty well the most unreliable vehicle you can buy so it's a matter of how much tolerance you have for persistent issues and dealership visits.

Like Alfas they have a difficult time being reliable for even journalist reviews;

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...r-evoque-p300/

Quote:
In the grand—and, unfathomably, still perpetuating—tradition of British cars, the Rover's electronics are so flaky that unreliability seems designed in. The screen lags as though someone let Grandpa use the internet and click on all the pop-ups. And in a most ironic failure, the feed from the backup camera starts to stutter and freeze just as the proximity markers appear on the display. So the closer you get to obstacles, the choppier the feed gets. That bumper behind you still appears to be two feet away when you feel the impact.

Isn't the x3 more comparable to the velar? I traded my full size supercharged range into the x3m and have buyers remorse right now. I miss the ride of range rovers it's always so much nicer than the bmws. And I've had many many many bmws mostly Ms though.

I should have looked at the velar SV. I think you will find that much more comparable to the x3m and a much better ride. The Range Rover sport is a weird car, it's big but doesn't have any space. It drives like a full size range but without the space. So I went full size. The velar is great

I mean close to 6 figures on the sticker price the door was so heavy to close. The tailgate made a sound like a generator when opening and closing. AND the cup holder flap was creaking. Beautiful vehicles. Great off road performance. Luxury models do have a presence. But I do not know how people deal with this?

Correct, the Jag SVR is the direct competition to the X3M. I chose the SVR and am extremely pleased with the decision. Cosmic thrust at all RPMs, intoxicating sound, supple ride that is wonderful for daily use, and excellent appearance outside and inside. Tech is not at the cutting edge, but plenty good.
