Charging our Batteries!

Is there a special way to do the AGM?

If the charger supports AGM, yes, just follow the charger instructions.

Noco Onboard Charger

My son has a 2015 F25, when temps are low and stay there, periodically I connect an on-board charger which has worked flawlessly.

For many years, inside I used a Noco G3500...on my E71 X6M... once and a while.

The cables on the onboard charger are far better for winter use - which is my concern. The thick black cable is the one from the on-board charger...the other one is a Noco quick connect I left in place if I ever use a battery settings saver...

My X6M which is now relegated to the outside will very soon have is own on-board charger. It hadn't been outside for a couple nights...when I went to start it and was met with "increased battery discharge".....the battery OEM was replaced last winter....

And when we are away, turn them on-off using a smart plug and Smartthings...

Shumacker 2,12,52 amp charger

That's just it. My battery is new this last summer. I only drive to work 4 miles each way. My auto stop feature does not come on that often only after a longer drive. I realize that there are parameters that control it's cycling. Would a 2amp for an hour or 2 hurt?

I would just use a suitable charger and let it get on with it...

You don't say what charger you have. It needs to be AGM compatible. I recommend you go to the auto parts store and buy a batter "maintainer". I have a Schumacher one that costs about $37 and you can leave it on for as long as you want - months if you are not using the car. . A maintainer shuts itself off and only comes back on if the battery drops. Just leave it on overnight. The one I have looks big in the online picture, but is about the size of a couple packs of cigarettes.

4 mile trips are too short, you really need to be sure you find an enjoyable "long way" once in a while to make sure things sometimes get truly warmed up.

I monthly go 200 miles 1 way trip on highway. And 8 miles each way to work daily (which is kind of marginal from what I've read for the battery).

I use a CTEK Multi US 3300 charger on both my Bimmers. They don't sell them anymore on Amazon, but I think the MXS 5.0 is similar. On the Multi US 3300, you just select the mode with the snowflake for AGM batteries. On the MXS 5.0, there is an AGM mode. $66 on Amazon.

I charge the batteries overnight every three months. I drive the 320i roughly 70 miles per day and my wife drives the X3 about 35 miles per day. So we're getting some charge back into the batteries while driving.

Just picked up the CTEK 5.0 and it is fantastic. I work from home so most of my driving is short distance. That's hard on batteries so I plan to put it on every few weeks to extend the life and keep it topped off. I did my research and the CTEK is by far the most recommended and what most manufacturers including BMW put their name on to sell under their brand. I almost bought a Duracell charger at Costco, it would have saved me $16 and I'm sure it didn't have the features the CTEK does.

Do you know the difference between BMW charger 61432408592 and the ctek mxs 5.0?

From what I understand it's the same, just branded, but I don't know that for sure. I also have the CTEK charger, and that works fine for AGM batteries. I use it and BatteryTender solar panels when in storage.

In the bmw description it is stated
  • maintenance charging of 1.2 ampere hours (Ah) to 160 ampere hours (Ah)
  • 12-volt AGM batteries, lead-acid batteries, and lithium-ion batteries
  • charge deeply discharged batteries
Does the BWM charger has the AGM reconditioning option?

I have the BMW charger, it's made by ctek. I've used it to charge/condition the AGM batteries on my Mercedes and BMW vehicles for the last 5 years without any issues. The manual does state it supports AGM.

That is the old version with separate RECOND mode.
The new one is this and it is also for Li-Ion batteries.
It is charging AGM batteries under the Normal mode but I don't know if it has AGM reconditioning as the old one.
