Nothing to do with oil consumption, the system warning is "oil level unknown"

I had the same warning last week, it cleared itself and hasn't come back but since the RIS the car hasn't felt right the engine feels held back and the car slower than before, I wonder it the overfilling is an issue.

Mine hasn't come back but there has to be an issue here, that's the trouble of being the guinea pigs for a new M engine, the engine definitely feels off colour and down on power since the RIS though.

You don't need to.

Just drive for 30mins and recalibrate the oil sensor / measurement and it won't happen again. Going to your dealer is just wasting your time.

Anyone still getting this issue? I've seen the message 3 times in the last 6 months. Always stop and check the oil level via idrive and it's fine.

I had it a few times a few months ago especially after aggressive driving. Was the unknown level message. Have not seen since. Software bug.

Happened to me about a month ago. Message came up twice on the same trip. When I stopped to check oil level everything was OK. It has not happened since but I decided to carry a quart of oil in the car just to be safe. It was also a good excuse to buy the BMW oil bag which comes with a disposable funnel to facillitate impromptu top ups

Sweet looking bag. Is it leak proof?

It looks to be leak proof plasticized canvas and is a BMW part so quite well made. Don't know about the zip but the inside flap is quite substanial. I wouldn't fill it with oil but expect that any dribbles from the quart oil container inside would not be a problem. I guess you could first put the oil container inside a ziplock bag before putting inside the oil bag if this was a concern.

Yes. As with earlier posters, the message indicated an inability to measure oil level rather than low oil. Oil level was OK when measured. However, this caused me to think about what to do in the event of a true low oil situation. I decided it would be a good idea to carry a quart of appropriate oil in the car, just in case. And, because BMW, it was necessary for me to also buy the special oil storage bag.

My money is on that you just wanted to buy the bag and you have cookies in it .

For $10, I'm gonna get it...and some cookies

The only time I have had the issue above is when I hit rev limiter by accident.
