DIY interior bike rack
Since I could not find an interior bike rack anywhere for the 2nd Gen X3, I decided to make my own. All parts are readily available and total cost was less than $90. Only tool required were a drill and a file. The cost could have been around $75 but I opted for a 3rd quick disconnect fork block. If anyone wants more details IO can provide a list of parts and source. The finished product looks pretty good.

Looks really professional. Excellent job. For the life of me, I just can't figure out why you guys want to put your bikes inside the car. Especially mountain bikes. I know there have been times when my mtn bike was caked with mud and I didn't even want to put it on the outside of the car. I bought a Saris outside rack and works great with the X3. Anyway, again really nice job.

The one designed for the first generation X3 also works perfectly for those that don't want a do-it-yourself project.

First of all a trailer hitch costs a lot, and a roof mount is a hassle to work with. My wife isn’t big enough to mount one on the roof. There’s also the fact that I don’t like to place $7,000.00 worth of bike on my bumper with a sign that says “steal me”. The interior bike rack was one of my reasons for choosing the original X3 and I’m happy it works just fine in the F-25. For those that want to do-it-yourself and save some $$$ the one that uppie designed looks great too. Uppie, would love to see a parts list and more pictures. How do you secure the back wheel? Once you mount the bike holder section the system is extremely secure as the 4-point box is completed and secure. Re-drilling the crossbars to mount at 4-corners is completely cosmetic. I ended just removing the hardware from that side. It’s actually a tad easier to install as you only have to slide in and secure the crossbars on one side. If you want to secure both sides, 1 minute with a drill will take care of that, but I’m lazy, and since it adds no stability I just use it with the 2 secure points instead of 4. Several members inquired about my DIY bike rack components:
www.8020.net can provide the main aluminum cross member and other hardware. The fork block secures the forks in such a manner that the rear wheel does not need to be attached to anything. (3 point load). Most bike shops carry fork blocks. Filing the elevator bolt haed was the most time consuming aspect of this build. I originaly wanted to use the bolt assembly from the Gen 1 interior rack but could not find the part number. If someone can provide that, this project would require minimal effort! |

Very neat. Could you explain what you have under the Bianchi, it would look as it is some type of channel that guides the wheel towards the front seat.
Normally, when I load my bikes, it starts as a one person operation, I start cursing and require assistance. I get mad that the bike is tracking crooked or just scuffed up the wall/seats etc. This looks as though it prevents that. Do you require assistance, loading, holding and tightening the forks in the process? Further, for your mountain bike, it looks as though you have the front passenger seat tilted forward. Are you able to comfortably transport yourself, a passenger and your pick of bikes without having the wheels rubbing against the leather? |

It was the interior bike rack that was made for the first generation X3. I’m just too lazy to reinvent the wheel, and the one I had for my old X3 works perfectly. |

You are awesome dude, you crafted and engineered a beautiful product. I have done so much research for a interior bike rack, but nothing has come close to the looks and simplicity of your masterpeice. Now a serious question, can you make me one? Even better why don't you make these and sell them, use kickstarter to raise funding, I will be the first one to donate if you can sell it for less than a $100. So give it some thought, will you make it? Let me know. Thanks |

Here's mine and I made it for my E83. It should work just fine on the F25 without any major modifications.

How is the interior height of the F25 versus the E83? Even with the front wheel and seat removed my bike barely fit inside. I recall the E83 rack had an up sloping channel for the rear tire. I used Velcro straps to secure it. To build my own, I'd explore getting a liner that covered the rear seat when down and secure wheel attaching points to it.
PS a quick word of advice: be sure to fully losen the front fork before allowing the bike free at the back. I losened the back once and the bike tipped over while locked in the front, bending the prongs. Fortunately I was able to get it straightened and not need to replace it. |
