G30 Ceramic Control unit install?

I’m pretty sure that this will plug and play but wanted to check to see if anyone has done it or had any experience?

There's definitely a post on here somewhere. Either in this forum or the G01 forum, but definitely was following a thread a couple of months ago for this exact question - answer was yes, do-able with the one exception of the passenger fan not working, as I recall. Not 100% certain about that. I tried a search but couldn't find it, maybe you'll have more luck or someone here will track it down for you.

EDIT: Found it! https://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showt...&highlight=g30

Mostly graphics i.e. you can see the seats depicted in the linked unit vs ours that just shows a scale for heat / air etc. Basically a cool factor I suppose

The passenger side fan can't be controlled separate from the driver as the x3 / x4 doesn't have a separate fan for the driver and passengers. The same fan does both sides.

Ceramic also looks funny if it's the only thing in the car. Need to change the idirve controller to ceramic as well to make it cohesive.

Yeah I'm the end I decided against ceramic and I've bought the non ceramic version.

Will see how it goes when it arrives.

Thanks for the tips and the link.

I may well still get the ceramic iDrive controller later and then upgrade the knobs on the climate control.

Do the passenger vent power buttons still work for the single zone?

The only thing to be aware is that if you retrofit the ceramic controls (AV/iDrive) it will throw a code when you/the dealer are running ISTA for diagnostics/retrofits etc as it will complain you do not have the option 4U1 (Ceramic controls) installed
Some dealers will be fine with it , others may not be happy to and ask you to re-install the original parts in order to perform diagnostics etc

What is the difference between the ceramic and non-ceramic version?

It's hard to tell from the pics - are they a different color or material?

It is basically an aesthetic enhancement, the knobs/iDrive controller have a dark ceramic /glossy finish.
The feel is a little bit smoother (ie ceramic feel)

Thank you.
Passenger side fan button doesn't work.

Not a big deal for me since I always on Auto. Just adjusting the temp most of the time.
If it gets too hot, I just pressed the Max AC for a few minutes then go back to Auto.

Interesting... I’ll keep my fingers crossed that it adjusts for RHD!

I believe it should detect it based on your VO.

Hey Ben, is that ceramic idrive control, you swapped out the whole thing, OEM for OEM?

Or, some other route?

Thanks.

Would be interest to see if these knobs can be upgraded or replaced from secondhand set, for instance.

Same here, non-ceramic one, mainly because the ceramic version had to come from Germany, and they are screwed up over there with supply chain, particularly electronics parts, and didn't want to wait ~months. I'm still waiting for my replacement headrests from Germany, for weeks. Damn you....

That was it! I was trying to understand what others meant in posts elsewhere that retrofitting the ceramic version of g30 radio/climate unit requires coding. Ok, will need to keep this in mind, requires coding to add the S4U1A option to the car. This would be good reason for me to learn esys + launcher.

But then again, don't know if some savvy place would know that f97/f98, g01/g02 never offered this option.

Then again (urgh), if mixing S4U1A=yes retrofits with S4U1A=no retrofits in the car coded with S4U1A, then that would also set an alarm in ista scan (???). So, it's all or nothing retrofits wrt such option. Although, now sure how many more of S4U1A=yes retrofits are left or worth doing. hrm... Maybe i should just keep 4U1=no in the car.

Are those dealers that are fine with the fault codes due to wrong variant of the control units (eg. idrive control unit, heating/AC control unit that are wrong variant installed), is fine with proceeding with diagnostics and software updates?
