Shipping X3 with tires inside
Hi All,
First post. I posted on reddit bit figured this may be the best place to get answers! I will be having my X3 shipped by train in Canada. The transporter says I'm allowed tires in the car. I have 20" tires and rims. I will be using moving blankets. I'm looking for ideas on how to tie down the tires so they don't move around. What kinds of straps can I use so they don't move around? Also, will the tires be bumping up against the rear window? |

I haven't tried fitting rims and tires yet, but do you have the tie down accessories for the rails? Those would work pretty well.
They would also fit well with the seats down and rims unsecured on their "backs", but I wouldn't risk doing that and creating marks in the leather of the middle row seats from being squished down so long. The lower seat belt restraint will jab the seatback.

Can you not fold the seats flat, then cargo blanket(s) under and over the wheels/tires… and then attempt to ratchet strap them down to whatever is available/showing? I’ve never had to strap something of that size down… but I have thrown my four wheels in the back of my X4 (with the seats folded flat) to take them to get powder-coated. Obviously- having tires on takes up quite a bit more space. With the seats flattened, I believe the actual seat LATCH might work as a strapping point… and then there should be some hooks as well at the back of the cargo area (to latch to). Not sure on how well those points help…?

Also, assuming your rear seats are adjustable to lean forward, you may be able to just put them in left to right. With the seats in the fully upright/back position, the hatch won't close; but If you adjust them forward about 2-3 inches, the hatch can close. If you're not familiar with it, on the lower part of the rear seats near the doorway is a pull/button that will let you adjust the locking point.

Yep. My X1 had 2-3 locking points, but it was all based on the release pull. I like the system on the X3 better.
Don't forget to stow the cargo cover/shade underneath the cargo floor area first, if you have one.

Take saran wrap/cling wrap and wrap up the tires so they don't scuff anything inside. Put the back seats down. lay all of them flat. Should be tight enough that they don't move. I'm not too sure on how much jostling goes on in a train transport though. Probably pad any loose areas with the moving blankets you mentioned.

When I get my seasonal wheel/tire changeover at Discount Tire...they always put the wheels/tires that came off in a plastic bag. Then they get layed FLAT on the cargo floor with the rear seats folded down. This prevents the wheels from ROLLING around while driving or having to come to a quick stop. If the rear cargo area isn't big enough to lay all the wheels flat...lay two down flat, then lay the remaining wheels at an angle on the edge of the tires laying flat so that they are secured from moving, too. Example: lay one wheel/tire flat like this: -- then lay another wheel/tire at an angle resting on the one laying flat to secure from rolling: \ They should end up looking like this: --\

Dumb question, is there even enough room inside the X3 to fit 4 tires/wheels? I had a 2019 X3 and I dont recall having all that space, but it has been awhile.

I have a 2018 and I’ve put (4) 245/50 19” wheels with tires on them . All 4 laid flat with the seats folded down no problem.

Tbh good tire totes make it easier to store and carry seasonal tires, and they honestly don’t cost that much so I think it’s worth using them. They’ve made ferrying seasonal wheel/tire set to and from the car so easy and protect both the wheels/tires and the car.
