I think it's a pretty safe be no one will be charged a subscription fee from now on. My buddy mentioned his expired last month and CarPlay continues to work.
The only question is, will the reimburse anyone - either for the subscription $$ already spent or for those who slapped down $300 (like myself) for 240 month option for the 2018.

"Apple claims it doesn't charge car manufacturers a fee to use CarPlay, but costs are incurred in integrating it with the car’s screen. Most manufacturers factor this into the list or lease price of the model, but BMW was the first to decide to pass that cost onto the customer and give them a choice."
It would be nice if they gave choice to use android as well, instead of fighting over petty money. Btw they thought someone would follow but it turned out bmw was one of few to be so greedy. |

Updated Autoblog article stated the following:
Update: BMW tells us that this change is taking place "immediately." All 2019 and 2020 models equipped with Apple CarPlay will not have to pay an annual subscription, BMW says. There's still no official word on refunds for folks who already paid. https://www.autoblog.com/2019/12/04/...apple-carplay/

I suspect it'll only show as available on your connected drive account if the VIN of the car shows that it has Carplay Preparation.
