Rearview Camera Recall Campaign No. 19V-684

I have a 2019 X3 built this past June. Overall the X3 has been a delight to drive and met or exceeded my expectations. The purpose of this post is two-fold, one to see if other members have had a similar experience, and two, let members who have not had the update done yet, know a more realistic timeframe.

In November I received the "Important Non-Compliance Recall" letter regarding the Rearview Camera Recall Campaign No. 19V-684. Even though I had not experienced any of the issues described in the letter, I made an appointment for today, for one of the first slots, 8 a.m. (as recommended even if not experiencing problems). The recall letter stated the software update could take approximately one hour.

My X3 was taken in shortly after I got to the dealer, and I reiterated that I would wait while it was done. It ended up taking over 2 1/2 hours to complete. If you had this done to your X3, did it take that long?

It's likely the software update probably failed at one point and they had to start it over thus taking longer than expected. Or perhaps they just gave you a poor time estimate...or the techs took their sweet ass time and didn't start on it right away.

Software updates sometimes take longer than advertised because they can be problematic, taking more than one try to get it to take.

Beyond that, a service appt is a lot like a doctor's appointment .... it takes the Dr. seven minutes of his/her time to see you, but you spend a lot more time than that in the office. Once you drop off the car, it has to get to the service bay and a tech has to get to it. Once it's done, they have to write it up, get the keys to the cashier, etc.

I had this particular recall done in conjunction with the Oxygen Sensor update, but I dropped off at about 1000 in the morning, got a loaner, and came back that afternoon around 5 pm

I received the Recall Notice last week and made an appointment with my dealer for this morning, including a loaner. I asked about the time required for the update before I made the appointment and was told to allow 2 hours. I dropped off my X3 just before 8 am. The loaner I was given was a 2020 X5 4.0. I think it did not have many upgrades. The controls on the dash/center console seemed pretty low-cost type. Not impressed. Also, did not like the new speedo/tach/instrument setup. The brakes were pretty lousy compared to M-Sport brakes on the M40i.

When I dropped the car off I mentioned that I had pulled Fuse #203 to enjoy the exhaust sound. The service guy made a note of this on the service order indicating that it was in an envelope on the passenger seat, if it was needed for updating the software. When I picked up my SAV, the envelope was still on the passenger seat unopened. The exhaust sounded same as before the service.

Around 11am I received a text from the service guy that my car would be done around 1 PM. I showed up at 1:15 and it was, indeed, finished.

Glad to be back in my X3 M40i. I really enjoy driving it, though you would hardly know from my current mileage level - 2,543 miles since I picked it up on April 11, 2019.

I just had the update done. Was told it took 10.5 hours to complete. Had to stay connected to the computer overnight updating. Pretty ridiculous lol

Thanks for your responses. Actually the "approximately one hour" estimate was from BMW of North America, in their official Important Non-Compliance Recall letter.

Had I known it would take several hours, I would have asked for a loaner or been dropped back at my place and picked up when it was done.

Took my m40i to dealer for annual oil change and camera recall. They estimated 2 to 4 hours and gave us a loaner. It was about 2 1/2 hours

Unfortunately they reprogrammed all the ECU’s to factory settings so I spent an hour reprogramming it. Did find a few extra things to code though so it was worth it.

I was told for both "recall" software updates and an oil change it would take all day (6 hours). I dropped off on a Friday at 10 and they didn't complete until the following Tuesday 9am. Thankfully they did give me a stripped down X3 to drive.
I figure they didn't think it was too important (not enough money made) to get to and kept putting it off until they needed work.

Took my 2019 M40d in for a coding change (to let the boot open only when car unlocked first) told it would take an hour or so, whilst waiting I was told they were changing the gear lever as part of a quality control due to failing LEDs, mine seemed ok at the time ...4 and a half hours later it was done..!!! And so was I from having way to much of the complimentary coffee and biscuits (BMW waiting areas are far more well stocked than the usual mainstreem dealers.) Time I think to get BIMMERCODE...

If you ever have to get a programming recall, do not WAIT for it. You will only be let down no matter what time frame someone gives you.

In a perfect world programming can definitely get done in 1 hour. But if the programming fails, or a control module crashes it may take excessive time.

So just for future reference. If any body is going to get a programming update/recall just get a loaner. Or drop it for at least the day. Never WAIT!

Thanks for this advice. Certainly will heed it going forward. In the interim, perhaps some one at BMW Corporate with responsibility for drafting up the recall notices, will put more realistic time windows in the letter.

Well it's not unheard of for programming to take an hour or less. It would just be a lot better if they just put that you should drop off the vehicle and get a loaner if possible.

Thanks everyone for their input on how long it took the dealer to perform the software updates as I need to make an appointment for both the rear view camera and emissions recalls.

Dealer told me it takes 2-6 hours for the recall. I brought it in for oil change and to check for coolant system leaks since I was getting a strong odor of anti-freeze outside of the car. The recall, all of that (no leaks found), and complimentary car wash took 6 hours. I was planning to wait, but when they told me it could take 6 hours they offered me a loaner. I live 1.5 hours from the dealership so I just grabbed lunch, shopped a little and got a massage lol.
