M Performance Steering wheel

Just got my M Performance wheel with M Performance Carbon paddles. Installed it tonight. I also got the Carbon/alcantara steering wheel trim but it is slightly different than the M sport trim and I may need to get the X3 M steering wheel buttons and see if it's a direct swap over to make it all work.

This steering wheel is not compatible with Driver Assistance plus due to no capacitive sensor being installed. I decided to install anyway. My Active cruise control still functions normally but my Assisted Driving no longer works. Also my steering wheel heater obviously no longer functions. No lights or malfunctions though.

Looks awesome. I hate my non-sport wheel. Did you do it yourself? I know there is a how to but any tips? Care to share the cost?

Super jelly.

Looks like it's got the button for steering wheel heating, so wonder why it wouldn't work? Is there any reason why not? Sad as it may seem, not having that would be a dealbreaker for me.

BMW M performance wheels with Alcantara do not have a heater grid in the wheel. You have the button but it no longer functions

When you replaced your steering wheel did you replace your steering wheel buttons or was that already installed on your wheel?

Edit: did some more research. 2018/2019 steering wheel buttons are different shape than 2020. See my photos at top and this gentleman's photos. I have just ordered 2019 Steering wheel buttons and will see how they work out next week.

I did it all myself. I get employee cost because I am a technician at BMW. Saved a lot of money. Still not cheap though. Will add up the total in a bit and repost

Edit: I already had the M Sport wheel

Heating steering wheel is no brainer to me, especially now at those cold days.
Wouldn't swap.

Alcantara is designed to be pleasant to touch. So normally the leather wheel would be cold but the alcantara is like putting your hands on a fuzzy blanket lol. I only ever used the heated wheel for about 20 seconds anyway. There's no way I could keep it on, it gets way too hot.

I also live in Southern California too so... it doesn't really get THAT cold

The reason for this is because the M performance wheel is literally just the wheel, as pictured above. You swap all of the wiring, covers(spokes), buttons, airbag from your existing wheel. Therefore, he has the heat button because his old M sport wheel had heat.

This is why one can't just buy the M performance wheel and use it if you don't already have the M sport wheel (e.g. 2018 X3 M40i).

No, I need to use the original buttons on my M sport wheel to the MP wheel.

Okay. I found out that 2020 buttons are different than 2018/2019. I just ordered a set of 2019 buttons and will see how it works out. Same connectors, same lines. Everything should work. Just a couple less buttons on my steering. As long as I can use my carbon trim I don't even care lol.

To make this carbon fiber/alcantara trim piece work I had to purchase Steering wheel buttons from a 2019 and install them in. Plug and play no coding or anything.

Spicing up an old thread. My steering wheel has changed a lot over last year. Been waiting on these for a few months now.

Brand New G80/G82 M3/M4 Competition Carbon Fiber shift paddles installed. Dare I say first on an X3. I really enjoy the length of them. The M Performance carbon paddles that are the same shape as the standard aluminum paddles on the M40i are just too small and I firmly believe in staying OEM if possible.

Steering wheel trim replacement

Hi,
Can I clarify
I have a M135i basically same standard wheel like you had with silver trim.
I want to put the carbon alcantara trim on to replace the silver trim keeping the existing wheel.
Mine has the new button style.
It all looks the same so you’re saying it’s a direct swap?
Many thanks

Yes. There should be a part number for direct replacement with your newer style buttons. The trim may look just like this one, glossy carbon, or it may be a dry carbon/Alcantara like the G20 style. You will need to check with your local BMW parts department, try and find someone who's knowledge with retrofits and parts accessories.

I really want to get one of these wheels for my '18.. I loath the thickness of the stock "sport" wheel after I got used to the F-series M-Perf wheel.

Definitely worth it. Really changes the driving feel of the car. I suggest getting one.
