Hello everyone,

I'm currently looking at purchasing an X4 M40i and just wanted to get an idea of what I should look out for... given they are rarer cars, not a ton of info out there.

It sounds like the N55 is pretty reliable. Is this also true for its 355hp form? What other things should I look out for?

Primarily looking at 2017s that are CPO and fully loaded (specifically want active cruise). Seems like most are listed in the high 30s. Most around 35k miles. Anyone buy one recently and can share what market value truly should be?

Appreciate any input! Thanks!

The N55 has been around for a while and should be fairly reliable, as long as you maintain it well - regular service intervals, look for weird changes/noises, don't wait for a problem to get bad before fixing it, etc. I've got an N54 and an N20 and they've both been reliable, just a little higher maintenance than other cars.

Picked up a '17 M40i executive car 2 years ago. Its still an N55 engine - just juiced up a bit. Awesome car for the CPO money. Our '16 X5 also has has N55. Plan to keep both for quite a long time.

Purchased in Southern California. Fully loaded X4 M40i, Long Beach Blue, 20's, no heated seats or drivers assistance, everything else pretty much. Car was perfect. 40k miles, CPO warranty for 2 years. $34k

Love the car. Its so much fun! And I have a tuned F10 M5 with 700 hp haha.

The N55 in the X4 M40i is "not your grandfather's motor." The design is quite different in key areas. For starters it is a closed deck on the M40i. The M40i shares its engine with the F87 (M2). The exact model designation is: N55B30T0.
It seems to be a solid motor. Although, having said that I had one oil pump (this motor has two - to deal with high lateral forces) go bad. It was covered under warranty, but I can no longer state that my motor is "rock solid." The symptom of this bad oil pump was that the electronic dipstick function would fail consistently.

Mine was just delivered from Florida.
X4 M40i
$35k with $1200 shipping. Paid $37k and some change after fees n taxes.
21k mikes.
White on black
19" wheels
No winter package and no upgraded led headlights and still had adaptive. I wanted the projectors.

Love love love it so far. Only regret is the ugly ass brakes. (X5)

Just got delivery of a 2017 X4 M40i, Carbon Black over Saddle (looked for weeks for one in this spec with Adaptive LEDs).

20" wheel package, just about all options except the multi-camera view stuff, no heated steering wheel or back seats either.

CPO out of northern California, 31K miles, $38,900 shipped to Arizona. They just put brand new Michelin Pilot Super Sports on it before going on the truck. Front brakes and rotors (yuk) changed out about 4K miles ago. Couldn't be happier, other than I still have to register the car in AZ and pay taxes (probably another $3K).

Only bummer is that I found one at CarMax a few weeks earlier and paid $800 to have it shipped to my local CarMax. No LED headlights, 41K miles, and lots of aluminum corrosion from being back east. I passed on it thankfully. Price was only a grand cheaper than my CPO purchase too. Bone-head move on my part, $800 down the drain.

Just got the rubber OEM floor mats, and later looking forward to front window tint, and maybe some other light suspension and wheel mods that others have done here on the forum...Hoping there's an alternative to these hideous brakes, but other than that, this one's staying stock!

Thanks for all the responses.

I actually pulled the trigger on a white CPO 2017 back in late January. Fully loaded with LEDs and the ACC package/option (think it has everything but wireless charging). 35k Miles and only 37.9k, only 4 hours away in Ohio. All is well so far (or has been taken care of by BMW service already), although I do get a weird high pitched electrical hum with the HUD. For now the car needs a detail and some touch up on the paint chips. Previous owner wasn't as much of an enthusiast it seems...

I'll have to post some pics when the weather gets better, but here was pick up day. So far have done black M performance grills.

How do y'all like the adaptive LEDs? I passed on that because I wanted projectors.

I really like them a lot, but also looking forward to having the European coding done at some point to get the 'true' adaptive functionality. It's a $1900 option, so might as well get the full bang for that expensive buck!

BTW, congrats Dem3ern on your Alpine white! Looks great in white. That's too bad about the previous owner, but not really surprising on a lease car. Doing a little research, mine was leased by George Zimmer, the guy who founded Men's Wearhouse (wife's car). It was well taken care of and seems to have been garaged.
