M40i Carbahn tune and MPG

Dealer installed (w/o loud start up) with warranty. Had it about a two weeks. Car is much peppier in comfort and plus modes. Really fun. Find myself running up on cars and needing to back off.

Despite running it hard, I believe I am getting better MPG in mixed driving (23-24 MPG vs 22). About to go on 4th July trip so will see if I match or best my pre-tune 31 MPG HWY (cruise control 75 mph).

Anyone else experience better fuel efficiency with their tunes? Seems counterintuitive.

Hey Neipa, I'm also in North Carolina. Where did you get your Carbahn tune? Was it at the dealership in Durham? I'm very curious about the tune as well for my 2019 x3m40i, I like that it comes from Steve Dinan and how their creed is being conservative with their tunes (even though i think 400 some horsepower is insane for this car already haha).

What was the process with the tune, did you have to leave the car at the dealership for a couple weeks while they sent off off your ecu or something from what I've heard...?

Tune process

Tune: Hendrick BMW. Great service. You'll get a loaner if you need it.
Scheduled appointment, dropped off in the AM. Ready around 4. Noticed improvement immediately.

MPG HWY down 26 from 30-31. Around town slightly better. Still better than my old X3 335 and acceleration is much improved.

Theres the exhaust roar enable on the start up in this video. Gives you somewhat an idea. Different tuner completely but Im sure it could be close.
The start roar on BM3 goes to about 2100-2200RPM.

ah ok. It's pretty mild in my opinion. I'd save the $100 and just bypass it. Use that money towards an actual exhaust upgrade

Guessing it's Hendrick Southpoint in Durham. Don't believe it's available at Independence or Northlake. I would jump on it for my M4 if available but was told at both dealerships a couple of months ago that it's not available.

Well that kind of sucks, I wouldn't mind driving up to Durham from Charlotte if they could get it back to me in a day.

BMW in South Point, Durham

Sorry, didn't not know how many different Hendrick BMW dealership there are and I figured they were the same since they are under the same owner.

I was told the limiting factor is Carbahn "installing" the tune over the internet.

Perhaps you can arrange with BMW/Carbahn to get to your car early so you can limit your time away from Charlotte. I worked with Drew Levat, BMW Durham.

I passed on the startup sound. Didn't seem that interesting.

Overall very pleased. I'm no car enthusiast, but acceleration is smooth and achieved without having to punch it.

Also Neipa, did you get the non-warranty or warranty option, difference of $750 and $1500 seems like a lot...just wondering what you did and your reasoning. thanks!

Warranty version

I went with the warranty version just in case the tune damaged the engine. I doubt it would because the engine can generate much higher HP/torque and I really don't push the car expect when merging or passing.
Based on this, you might want to go w/o warranty.

I paid less than $1500, but I skipped the engine crackle add on.

I am happy I got the tune.

Go see Matt at EuroMpire here in Charlotte. He has installed two Carbahn tunes on my 2016 340i that I sold last year in addition to my current 2015 435i. EuroMpire is an authorized Carbahn dealer and is located in the Indian Trail/Monroe area. They are awesome and can do anything you want from performance upgrades to all regular maintenance. No need for you to go to Durham for the Carbahn tune.

I also have a 2019 X3 M40i and have been wanting to get the Carbahn tune for it as well. I'm a big fan of theirs and their overall approach to tuning. Their tunes don't add quite as much power as BM3 or MHD but they are smooth and reliable.
