X4 M40i pops and sounds...can’t deal!

Saw this video, not sure I can live with that sound daily, okay for occasional burps and pops!

Full disclosure. I have a 2018 X4 M40i (N55 vs. B58) and I typically drive in Sport (not Sport +). The car or more importantly the exhaust has ~ 7K; so it is just starting to "open up".

If you are driving in Sport+ and behind or outside the car and the exhaust is fully "opened up" it may sound as aggressive as it does in the video.

If you are driving in Sport w/the widows down, you will hear some of what you hear in the video.

If you are driving in Sport w/the widows up, you hear very little of what you hear in the video.

If you are driving in Sport w/the widows up and the radio on, you will barely hear what you hear in the video.

If you are driving in Comfort, you will not hear what you hear in the video.

If you want to hear some serious overrun let's go for a ride in my M2!

adaptive offers the same power and aggression if you drive it that way without the loudness, sometimes I want that sound other times I do not. I do find it a little too "look at me " when there are people nearby.

Ok after test driving the 2019 X4 M40I this is pretty accurate.

In comfort mode, you will hardly hear any pops. It wont be until sport, and sport plus where it really becomes more noticeable.

When you are in the car windows up, I barely heard any pops. It isn't until you're standing behind the car where you really hear it, just my opinion.

With that said, I really like it.

Rev it high, using full boost and let off quick and let it decel quick. Most likely to do it in a lower gear on decel after a full throttle run.

It won't be that bad. I've got a Hellcat and that is one VERY loud exhaust and my neighbors don't complain. But also live out were houses are spread out from one another. The M40i really isn't that bad at all even on cold start/Sport+ mode.

Coming from a hellcat is another level of exhaust conditioning

Haha, it's going to be such relief! Thought it was cool at first but when you try to use the phone, you're yelling and people are always asking if you're driving, etc. It's nice on the freeway during cruise but if you are going around town or doing any sort of acceleration, it's loud. I mean, great sound but loud. Neighbors don't mind but we live in the country so we are spaced apart decently.

From the interior I cannot even hear the pops on our M40i. You have to have the music off and windows down. Disappointing....

When I put my X4 M40i in Comfort mode, there is no pops whatsoever. It sounds like any other car on the road. In Eco Pro it gets even quieter. The loud noise and pops only happen in Sport plus

I live in a quiet residential neighborhood so when Im driving around at night, I keep the car silent by leaving it in comfort mode.

I was told the same yesterday. Old X4 F26 M40i is louder than European X3/X4 M40i G01/G02 due to those new filters in the exhaust system. what a pitty, the F26 is so musical

Yep, the sound insulation on the G02 is amazing. Now that I've defeated ASD, I can only faintly hear some gurgling even in sport mode. In comfort mode, it remains "classy". But if I really want to hear beast roar I can roll the windows down. I was worried that I'd hate the "obnoxiously loud" exhaust, but this one really gives you the choice, it's awesome.

It's also worth noting: "Comfort" on the G02 is so much sportier than "Sport" on the F26 35i ever was.

What do you mean by "defeated ASD?" My wife hates the loud exhaust.

ASD plays engine noise through the speakers to make it louder inside the cabin. If your wife hates loud exhaust outside, it won't help that.

You can use coding apps like Bimmercode to turn off ASD. Some have also discovered that if you have HK audio, you can also simply disconnect on of the boxes in the trunk.

Quiet now!

I talked to my service folks at BMW. They researched and found they could turn off the ADS interior engine sound simply by removing a yellow fuse. The difference is really great. Quit inside now and the stereo music is much better. Still if you get on it you can hear the real engine sounds which are perfect.

Now if I could just stop the loud exhaust when you first start her up. Some may like that but it sounds like something a teenager would modify a car to do. I am embarassed around my adult friends.

I had an x3 m40 loaner. The exhaust did not sound like that in comfort mode, and cold starts were not loud. Not even loud enough to wake up the dog, much less the neighbors. Now, if you want to hear a stupidly obnoxiously loud car that will wake up your neighborhood on cold start, check out an M3.

Dang, I'm impressed that your dealership gave you an M40i as a loaner. Whenever I'd bring in my M3 I'd usually get a base model X1/2.

The first minute at startup is really loud. It starts up at around 1200 to 1400RPM but slowly ramps down to 800 or so after maybe a minute. This happens every time you start it even if it has been running and it isn't because it's real cold here in Florida. Not so bad inside but outside it's loud. Guess I will get used to it as I'm told there is nothing they can do to stop it.
