1. the fastest color
2. easiest to maintain
3. most gawked at color
4. color shifts with different light
5. looks amazing with black wheels
6. makes women giggle with delight
7. it's a BMW statement
8. kidding aside, BGM is a fun color...LOL!
9. gets the best MPG because BGM obliterates air molecules

10. See post #29, BGM is Einstein and Mosses approved

Of course! Einstein noted this as a fundamental rule of the universe and even earlier, it was the original 11th Commandment that Moses brought down (but somehow misplaced.)

Here's my theory--make of it what you will:
  • Most americans choose a color that's some mixture of black and white, e.g. alpine white, carbon black metallic, black sapphire metallic, dark graphite metallic, mineral white metallic, and, lately brooklyn grey metallic. Y'know, blacks, greys, silvers, and whites. Let's call this category 1.
  • Then there's everything else, where black and white are not involved, e.g., phytonic blue metallic, tanzanite blue II metallic, and aventurin red metallic. Let's call this category 2.
  • People who are interested in the first category don't really cross shop with the second, and vice versa.
  • People who like category 1 are interested in a kind of conservative elegance in their choice of color.
  • People who like category 2 are interested in a kind of extroverted exuberance in their choice of color.
  • BGM is an interesting case that sort of contradicts my theory. It's the most rad of the conservative colors, with a little bit of blue chalk thrown into the grey to make it a bit more extroverted.

Interesting theory and observations. A corollary is that most US buyers (it runs ~80-90% historically) wish to buy from inventory for immediate delivery. I realize some market forces in recent history may have modified that. But, dealers stock wholesale for fast turnover and will select the configs that have popular content and least objectionable features. More people will "go along" with the grayscale than with the expressive colors, thus the dealers become "trained" to re-order what sold, even if the sale was an "acceptance" versus a "delight" for the buyer. Dealer doesn't care about that. Their only primary color is green. This results in dealer ordering patterns that become quite repetitive and entrenched in a self-fulfilling prophecy of non-color colors filling up the lots.

By the way, my favorite car in my garage is an ordered Valencia Orange, I just ordered Aventurin Red, as Night Thunder, Austin Yellow, or any Orange were N/A, and what is that replacing? A WHITE 330ix GT that happened to be available in inventory the moment I needed it in 2018. I bet the dealer ordered another white one to replace my sale.

This doesn’t fit my wife at all. Her favorite color is orange and had a Mini Cooper in Volcanic Orange. She wanted an orange X3 but settled on Alpine White because nothing else spoke to her like Volcanic Orange.

I don't know where I fit... I ordered Brooklyn Gray but Phytonic Blue was 2nd... does that make me moderate?

It may not be the color. It may be the name. As those of us who actually are Brooklyn natives know, everyone else wants some of that borrowed glory! Honestly, who would buy it if it was Staten Island Grey? And it’s from the same bridge!

And Category 3, where people are so interested in a Category 1 or 2 type color that they are willing to spend an extra $5000 to get an even more extroverted exuberance or a more unique shade of grey.

Guilty; though if I had been patient it might been chalk over one of the “special” grays

I had a grey 330d then an Estoril Blue 335d. My son and I used to play a game on the way to school to see who saw the most Estoril Blue (me) or grey, black or white (him) BMWs, the blue was that common in our neck of the woods. It was often a tie!

Funny but really don't see it that much anymore, it's more noticeable now by its rarity.

I somewhat agree but category 2 is not very adventurous either, especially Tanzanite Blue. I prefer dark grays and also category 2.
Bright reds, yellows and greens are the adventurous ones (Category 3?). There used to be a "snapper rocks blue" 4 series, that is where you start attracting attention.

According to the two "visualizers" in my head, that's not orange.
