Sure seems like some 'real' M-car owners are miffed by the m-performance models.

Relax, it's just a car, one that most anyone can get in the used car market these days.

BMWs volume cars ARE the X-models, they're not going anywhere and people like me are trading in their 'real' M-Cars for these.

To stay on topic: I like the new X4, and would probably have gotten it if it was available at the time. As an empty nester the X4 would be fine for me.

The only thing is that the rear quarter shot isn't really flattering. I'd bet it looks better in person.

It's a Sports Activity Vehicle but it's also a coupe but it has 4 doors but it's also a M Performance model so it's got a bunch of M badges but it's also not a real M car so they couldn't call it the X4///M but ///MX4 is kind of confusing so they stuck the ///M before the 40i because the engine is not 4L but actually 3L. There! Clear as mud.
Get the 30 m sport, hell of a lot cheaper and just as good

The X4 comes standard with Performance Control (DPC). Meaning the xDrive in the X3 uses DSC to brake the slipping wheel vs. the X4 which uses DPC; an electronically controlled sets of gears that allow DPC to transfer more drive power. Sounds expensive to me and may be the majority of the price differential?

Dynamic Performance Control: With this feature, torque splits between the left and right rear wheel to boost traction and handling for ultimate precision around corners.

http://www.bmwgroup-media.co.za/digi...ars_AWD_EN.pdf

This snippet from the link below is describing DPC...

https://practicalmotoring.com.au/car...tem-explained/

There’s also Torque Vectoring (DPC), which is something that BMW have fitted to every X6 (and X4) and are now slowly rolling out throughout the X-car range. A normal car has a differential which distributes torque 50:50 left and right, and when the inside wheel slows down, the outside wheel speeds up by the right amount to keep pace. Torque vectoring is a kind of slew-steer – when cornering a wheel is deliberately driven slightly faster than it would otherwise be in order to aid the turn.

For example, when cornering the outside wheel would be ‘over-driven’ to help the turn, but where the car is oversteering then the inside wheel would be driven more quickly. This is all done through a clutch pack that operates planetary gearsets, with the computers figuring out from the sensors what needs to happen when.

On BMW USA; If you compare the X3 xDrive30i and X4 xDrive30i. In the Overview under Handling, Ride and Braking it also says the X4 comes with the M Sport suspension standard, which from what I am reading elsewhere implies/includes DPC.

Only mention this b/c it wasn't clear if people were only comparing standard creature comforts/options vs. the items that are harder to see and quantify.

Wow a lot of X3 owners hating on the X4 sound like angry little beavers! The X4 is hands down a much sexier looking car than the X3. Yes it cost more because it’s a car that is for
Label whores just like myself. If you can’t afford it then settle and get the X3. I agree that cars in general are costing too much but I compared it to the macan, and the Benz and they are just as expensive. But to say that X4 is uglier than the 3 is insane. X2,X4 and the insanely good looking X6 were all designed for people that are willing to give up some space for a more stylish and better looking vehicle. On a more positive note thanks a million for posting a picture of the white X4 it helped me decide on style 701 wheels.

I’m looking at the MY2020 X4 M40i - I love these wheels (I assume 701?). Would these be available to buy after purchasing the X4? I would then sell the 21 rims that come with the X4 M401.

Although I would like to get the same size 701s in front and rear. I don’t like have 2 different size rims.

First BMW

Just purchased my first BMW, a 2019 X4 M40i in Black Sapphire Metallic, and I love it! I really didn't consider any other models after I saw the X4 on the local dealers lot, but I did test drive the 30i, and the M40i and Mercedes AMG GLC 43 Coupe twice, before making my decision. I thought the M40i had a better ride and handling than the GLC and it definitely sounded better. Contrary to some opinions I also liked the interior look and function of the BMW better than the Mercedes, plus I got more safety and interior functionality for basically the same price. To me the look of the X4 is both muscular and sporty and the M40i engine and handling matches the look. I also have enough cargo space for my golf clubs and a cooler, or a couple suitcases. If I want to take all of that and more, I can put the back seats down, or take my wife's full size SUV.

Anyway, I like reading all of the opinions and useful information on this forum so keep them coming. Safe Travels!
