Hi Dcaron,

I just went through a similar process and mixed LM Top tec 1800 with the ZF+BMW fluid but I am experiencing a bit of rough shifting. Did you complete your final fluid change including the oil pan? What was your experience?

As has been mentioned...ZF say 80-120K (Km) (go with the 80K if severe operation)...latest 8 years...

Did you do it or an indy?

My first instinct is to recheck the fluid level...1/2 an hour labour at a tranny shop...after mine I went for reassurance at a tranny specialist...all was well but just wanted to be doubly sure. They added .25 litre...I gained piece of mind...and increased confidence in my Indy....who I use in winter time...and where I don't want to do something...

I haven't done it yet...on our X3...but just did all fluids on a 2013 X6M with 60,000 miles...Yes, pan was dropped, magnets, filter and gasket replaced. If you drop the pan...don't reuse the bolts...you will regret it. My tranny oil was in great shape, as was the filter...minor fine paste on magnets. I could have got away with a drain and fill.

I don't think it was the greatest idea to mix...

Just did two diffs, ATF, and brake fluid today. Spent all day on it, since it's my first service on the X.
Diffs: Used Redline, they both took about 3/4 Liter. Information in this thread is accurate.
Transmission: It ran out at 2.5 liter or so, then I turned the car on and filled another two liters in, for about 4.5 Liter total. The transmission fluid kit from ECS had seven liters, so I'm a bit confused, but it's also used in other cars. Then there's the thing about a liter or two sitting somewhere else and it doesn't come out when you do the ATF with a filter/pan change.
No major problems getting any fasteners, fillers, drains loose. Car is 60,000 miles and 4 years old or so.

I bought the FCP euro kit, which came with 7L . I use about 4.8, and spill 200ml to be sure it was full when the car was running.

Anyway, as per chrisfix video on if its ok to change oil on a auto transmission, having some old oil is not bad at all.

Most important is to change the pan, (new filter + magnet).

Save your money. For my '13 X3 my BMW specialist mechanic used Amsoil gear oil in front and rear diffs, Amsoil trans fluid in tranny (surprisingly not their DCT fluid, search by BMW part number) and Motul DCT in the transfer case (what Motul recommends for this application and meets spec). Was done a year ago and everything is running and shifting great. There are a few other options for the transfer case if you search by specification such as the Shell spec.

FCP Euro sells ZF tranny kit: pan w/integral filter, bolts & 7 liters ZF Lifeguard fluid for < $300. Quite reasonable in my estimation.
