Car stuck at dealer for repair

Sigh. I dropped off my 2020 X3MC with 16k miles at the dealer because the HVAC fan speed was way down, like no more than 20% of full blast. They take it apart and the blower or whatever completely falls apart, kablooey. Part gets ordered, initially 1 day delivery, then 2 days, then 1 month backorder. F.

I'm given a loaner X3 30i and it has a hitch for my bike rack and CarPlay so I'm reasonably satisfied but damn, 1 month? They literally can't put it back together because the bad part fell apart.

I'll be reaching out to BMWFS to get some sort of credit on lease payment. I'm not needing to raise a stink over it but it sucks. Anyone else had their baby stuck waiting on parts like this?

This is the cold hard reality of the parts supply chain right now, compounded on luxury brands that source parts overseas in their home countries. I guess to avoid an unfortunate situation like this, you kind of have to check with your service advisor about parts availability before committing to bringing it in.

In your case, I'd be asking for a payment credit at a minimum.

My X3MC has been in 3x for almost 2 months, bordering on lemon law territory.

Did your SA try to release the car back to you while waiting on parts? Mine did, on a major engine part, no less. Classy. And they still want a 10/10 review.

Opened a case w/ BMWFS, they told me to call when I get the car back and they will request a credit. Asked if they could freeze my payments while car is in the shop, but they can only do retroactive credits.

I don't trust the dealer to watch out for my best interests, I don't trust my family in a BMW, and I definitely don't trust BMW to give me my money back after the fact.

He told me I couldn't have it back as it's in pieces and they can't reinstall the physically broken apart bits. I actually asked about getting it back but it would not be ideal and I would have it without HVAC. It's 95F today here so glad I passed on that one!

Mine was in for two months shortly after I got it and my SA was able to get two months of payments credited at BMWFS for downtime compensation.

Sounds like you just got your microfilter replaced and your Recirc flap got pushed the opposite direction. Just need to pull the flap back into normal position and recheck. Repaired quite a few so far and none needed additional parts

Ouch. I sincerely hope the dumb tech didn't do that unnecessary damage.

They're telling me parts are broken, like completely fell apart. I don't have more details.

Well it will all get fixed. There is an issue with replacing filters sometimes where removing the filter pulls the air flap past it's limit position and causes issues with air flow. I personally did this on my own X3 when doing my microfilter. Noticed it immediately when driving home after work that day. In my case all I needed to do was remove the microfilter and pull the flap back into it's normal position and recheck for nice movement. I've seen another case where the rod pops out that holds the flap and the actuator needs to be removed and reinstalled.
It's happened to several techs so far. And honestly it's a design flaw more than incorrect installation. Like I said, I did it on my own personal car and I can't tell you how many times I've replaced microfilters on car, maybe thousands. Microfilters are not difficult to replace at all.

It's a known issue with X3/X4 and G20 where the fresh air flap can be pulled past it's limit position when replacing a microfilter. It's a design flaw of the flap being too close to the microfilter.

Is micro filter the internal Cabin air filter? Just want to know for future reference. Because I changed my cabin air filter once already. No issue with my AC of course.

Surprise! the part showed up unannounced, they fixed it, and I just picked up my car. The paperwork says "found broken recirc vent flap" which was replaced. She blows strong once again and it's good to be back in the M. The 30i wasn't bad but this is sooooo much better.

If anyone would help with lease payment it would be your dealer. My car went into shop at 6 weeks old, and spent the next 3.5 months there waiting for parts from Germany. My dealer covered those months payment. All BMWFS might do is defer one or two months.

My time in loaner was less than two weeks and loaner was ok so I'm not concerned. If it had gone a month I would make a claim.

My X4M was in the body shop for 97 days!
After having it 3 weeks. Dealer ended up covering 2 lease payments for me!

They should have M car loaners for people that purchased an M. Nobody bought an M car to be driving a beater econobox X1 for months.

Ha, most dealers have sold off all their base model X3 loaners, let alone M loaners. For most dealers you're lucky to get a loaner at all and if you do, it's whatever Enterprise has sitting around.

It's important to tell your SA up front that you will NOT have your car tied up and torn apart waiting on parts availability unless the car can't be driven because of the nature of the repair.
