Paint/Trim Repair

Hi Guys,

Anyone have an idea of how much it would cost (if possible):
1) To paint repair a chip in the rear door sill (where you step into the vehicle) the paint is completely gone?
2) Can the interior black door trim be repaired for scratches?

I attached pics of the problem. The dealership had a swell time damaging my car during the last service visit.

I was quoted by a local detailer $1600 to remove the exterior paint swirls caused by the detailing done by the dealership. They also said for an additional $500 they will apply ceramic coating. Does that sound reasonable?

If they're correcting the swirls on the entire car, yes. If they are quoting $1600 for just that portion you mentioned, no. They're basically just buffing it out.

If that paint chip is in the inside of the door (i.e. not visible from outside) could you not touch that up yourself? I'd be tempted to fix that with a touch-up paint set rather than pay someone to do that. Maybe I'm just cheap lol.

Yes, it's on the inside. My understanding is you can't paint bare metal. I don't know how to touch it up properly.

Yes - for bare metal, you'd need a primer first.

But hey, if you've got a quote for $1600 to sort out swirls and things over the whole car, then I guess they'd take care of this, inclusive.

OK, I will ask the question: Why are you not holding the dealer accountable if you can prove they damaged your paint?

Pretty hard to chip factory paint to the metal, but if it is….

https://www.paintscratch.com/neworde...mer-Paint-Pen/

This web site has pretty anything you could need for minor chip and scratch repair.

No, the detailer already said they can't do anything with the chip and I should try a body shop.

I will ask them to pay once I know the total cost.

I already expect a hassle getting them to pay for anything, so in the event I can't be bothered I was hoping the costs wouldn't be too expensive.

Understood, was just curious if you pointed it out while picking up you car, or didn’t notice until you got home.

I noticed when I picked up my car. I tried speaking to the service manager upon pickup, considering I did not leave my car with them in that state and he proceeded to close the service department for the night.

I was quite irritated actually. I keep my vehicle clean and yet they returned it to me dirty. During service they left greasy finger prints on the bonnet, the door sill was chip (I'm assuming from the worker's boot or tool), there was a scratch on the door trim, there was washer fluid dried down the tailgate and bumper, and my front floor mats were dirty.

Pure incompetence. So sorry you had to put up with this mess.

Thank you. The whole ordeal has made me skeptical about bmw dealerships. Hoping the dealer I find for my next service isn't careless.
