Yeah, I am just about to take delivery of an M40i, so am about to remove it from my current car and then install in the new one (if it doesn’t already have it, which I am pretty sure it doesn’t).
You have to remove the centre console trim to clip in the wiring but it isn’t that difficult. I was a novice when installing it first time, so just took a bit of confidence to try and remove the trim but comes off easy. |

Wireless charging is really bad. Overheat my iPhone to the point that the camera flash would not work until the iPhone cool down.

The built_in pad actually has multiple functions..
- an inductive coupling for the phone’s cellular antenna, improving it’s signal. - is somehow related to the car’s WiFi option. I wonder if it’s also cooking my phone’s battery. |

Had it in my '18 M40i, rarely used it, but ordered it again on the '21. My main reason for not using it is I like to be able to see the phone while I'm driving, when at a stoplight etc. It works fine w my phone but a bit slow, but I recently had a X3 loaner without it and the storage cubby space in its place is more useful. So this and the gesture control are the most useless features on my car...

I ordered the wireless charging on my X3 back in January and it was in the car when I took delivery in March. I have used used it only twice. It makes my 12 Pro Max extremely hot. I have a cable in the car for those times I need to charge.

I picked up my new car Saturday. I drove for an hour to the golf course and kept my iPhone on the charging pad. I use the phone to record my score and give course information. The phone was dead when I got to the course. I stopped at the dealer on the way home, and he said it was the iPhone issues. I showed him this thread and the genius admitted they have an issue.

Maybe I'm another lucky guy because I never had issues with the wireless charging on my X3. I have used it many times (sometimes for over an hour) with a Galaxy Note 9 and a Galaxy S21 Ultra and never noticed any overheating because of the charging.
Both phones only get warm if I have Waze or Google maps running while charging but that's 100% expected because keeping the screen on for long periods of time + GPS use a LOT of energy and it's normal for phones to get warm. So either I'm lucky with the wireless charging unit on my car or, maybe, iPhones are not so good with wireless charging (ps: Samsung phones have supported wireless charging for many years, I wouldn't be surprised if it works better on their phones) or folks might be running Apple maps, Google Maps or CarPlay while driving. |

I suspect the difference between android and iphone is not to do with luck -- but more to do with not having wireless carplay running on your android phones. I would be willing to bet wireless android auto + streaming music, etc has the same issues

I'll give the wireless charging a go this week without connecting to CarPlay and see what happens... |

I don't have the wireless charging option but do connect my iPhone to CarPlay via the wifi. My phone does not heat up while driving and listening to music via CarPlay. When taking longer trips and using the GPS or maps the phone will get warm.

what ever your business, charging someone for something then not delivering and refusing to reimburse for the charge of something that was not delivered is fraud. you can't write into a contract that you're allowed to commit fraud and have that hold up in court. like a lot of people in car sales this entire final discussion could have just been BS rhetoric to try and make himself look good but if he were serious he would come to regret those words.

I've only had my X3 M40i for about 3 weeks, but I have been using the wireless charging all the time, and it has bene charging the phone perfectly fine.
I haven't noticed it getting particularly warm, but having said that, I tend not to use Carplay too much so maybe this is all just down to using power hungry apps and features, at the same time as charging it. |

I'm in the process of building out a car now and noticed there's a credit for those two items. That seems kind of annoying since i particularly liked the lumbar support. |

The right thing for BMW to do is commit to a retrofit of the wireless charging parts into cars at the local dealer once the parts shortage has subsided. Of course they are not going to do this because it would cost more money.. and they are not actually sincere in the first place.
I am also interested to know if they have omitted all of the features that get added with that option, or just the wireless charging module itself. Also - how does the VIN description of vehicle features (on bimmer.work , etc) compare to what is actually provided on the vehicle. I would be interested to know if there are NHTSA / DOT VIN related compliance issues assorted with these feature leave outs. Not sure how the VIN coding systems work. |

FYI
We picked up our'21 X3 M40i in Glacier Silver Metallic (paint color no longer offered for '22) last week as a PCD. It was built on 6/2/21 with the wireless charging pad as spec'd. It also has the deleted passenger lumber support which also removes the adjustable seat side bolster controller. |
