X3m40 Brake Recommendations
I need to replace my brake pads in about 2000 miles. I've been trying to find recommendations for rear brake pads. Also, do you recommend replacing the rotors as well as the pads? Thanks.

OEM pads. Rotors require replacing if below minimum thickness number stamped on the rotor hat. Or if they are pulsating/vibrating while braking, however that is usually attributed to front rotors.

I've used the powerstop Z23? series in the past. They seemed to be much less dusting than the oem's. Stopping seemed on par with stock.
Everything else what ^ said. |

Don't go OEM unless you love massive amounts of dust. Akebono and EBC are great pads with very little dust and decent pricing.

Akebono does not make pads for our cars yet. If you search there was a thread recently on another brand made in California that a person installed and was pleased with less dust. I can't remember the brand name?

I went with Centric and am very happy with them. Much less dust and performance is in line with the factory pads.

At 40k miles my rotors were fine to turn, didn't need to be replaced. I replaced fluid with Bosch DOT 5.1 and couldn't find Akebono, EBC, or really any of the big name options. Folks throw them out as recommendations but I really struggled finding any part numbers that ACTUALLY matched the M sport brakes.
In the end I went with DFC Euro Ceramics from Rock Auto and I'm very pleased with them. Pedal feel is firm, a very very slight loss in initial bite but otherwise they work well as a street pad and dust is much less significant. |

I only have 14,000 miles on my 2020 X3-30i with the original factory brake pads. I'm pleasantly surprised that "brake dust" hasn't been an issue. In fact, there's no issue at all IMHO.......so I'm somewhat surprised to read that others have any brake dust concerns.

Stoptech is Centric's performance line but don't have any pads apart from the rear for the M Sport brakes. For the front Centric has Posi-Quiet Semi-Metallic or Ceramic (not Posi-Quiet) For the rear Centric has OE Formula, Posi-Quiet Semi-Metallic, Posi-Quiet Ceramic, Semi-Metallic (not Posi-Quiet), Ceramic (not Posi-Quiet), PQ-Pro, or Stoptech "Street" (which is really just Posi-Quiet Semi Metallic). The fronts are the problem in finding a set if you're looking for a matched set front and rear. That said, you're most likely getting the same performance with the Posi-Quiet Semi-Metallics as you are the Stoptech Streets. They will be dusty. I have these on my F25 and they are quiet and stop great, but are pretty comparable in Dust levels to the OE pads, IMO. |

But they are because it takes time to setup tooling and machinery to make newer pads that are for the most part proprietary for our cars at this point in time.

Apologies for that. In my car rear pads are due in 3000-4000kms hence I was looking around only for these ones. And I thought one. And since I am using stoptech sports in my track toy and I love them - this is where my recommendation comes from. |
