As I wrote over a year ago........
I had the same difficulty with my 2020 X3 when I first brought it home. I called the BMW GENIUS line and they really helped.......they strongly suggested I use hold one of my "REMOTES" (the ones that came with the door) next to the mirror while programming.....I forget the actual steps but the key was to have one of the remotes in the car close to the mirror while programming. |

I had trouble with this too. I finally figured it out when I broke down the process in my head. No matter what garage door you have, the car needs to "learn" the remote, this will include frequency and codes. To do that, you have to pick a Homelink button and follow the steps to add a remote to that button. If you have a singe code garage door, you're done. With rolling codes, the garage door opener now needs to "learn" the car remote. This will be a process your garage door opener will have set up, but typically some form of press a "learn" button on the garage door opener, then press the assigned Homelink button (maybe a few times), they will sync and the garage door will move (open or close, depending).

Maybe a few times is the key. It took mine four or five tries before it finally worked. |

As I've written.....IF you have a hand held remote for your garage door USE IT to program the car's mirror garage opener. HOLD THAT HANDHELD REMOTE next to the mirror when you perform the programming. (most garage door openers are sold with 2 handheld remotes)
That's the advice I got from a BMW Genius after being frustrated that I couldn't easily program......... WORKED LIKE A CHARM.......!! |

Yep. Worked for me first time with both doors.
Push the home link button you want to program (it will slowly blink) Push and hold the handheld garage remote button (the home link will then flash when it captures the code) Run into the garage and push the “learn” button on the opener unit Run back out to the car and push and hold that home link button Easy peasy.

[QUOTE=Battin4th;27141992]It's been a while, but pretty sure this is what I did. I also opened the "owners manual" in iDrive, found the instructions for synching the garage opener, followed them, and it worked!
I was stuck at resetting the codes. Got a yellow light but no green one. No matter what I tried the blinking green light wouldnt come on until I opened iDrive to the instructions for Homelink. Makes no sense to me why this worked but Thanks! |

yes it's funny but this process can be tricky, I think the above has it correct, I've been able to sometimes do it without the learn button on the actual unit, but sometimes its a needed/added step.

FWIW here, I have programmed multiple (at least six from 2012 to 2023) BMW garage openers with the engine running. In Park of course. As long at there is power to the mirror, you should be able to do it.

So what if you've lost the actual garage door remote? Can a person still program using the learn button? I've tried every method. I've cleared all codes by pushing the first and third button until the green light rapidly blinks. Press the learn button on the back of the motor. And why in the 30 seconds, presses the first button on homelink. All that appears, is a slow blinking orange light. Until you depress the button again and the light goes away. I noticed if you press any button on the homelink, that same orange light blinks slowly.
Thoughts? Thanks |

Akricer,
If you lost the garage door remote, borrow one from a neighbor or friend. Program it to your door opener and use that to program your Homelink. Follow the instructions in the manual. I just programmed two different X3s ('20 and '24) to a rolling code opener and used only the handheld remote. Press the programmed handheld button within 1-2" of the BMW button you are programming (after yellow light blinking) and continue pressing both until BMW switches to green then release handheld button. Press BMW button three times after that and it should capture the code. Hope this helps. |

You can easily buy a remote clicker from Home Depot or Amazon, program that new remote to your garage door opener, then use that remote to program your car. it's always handy to have an extra remote anyway for say when you get a loaner car you can take the remote w/ you to the dealer and open the garage door w/ your remote even thought you have the BMW loaner.
Also, something that nobody has mentioned - I had a hell of a time programming my homelink in my car after it just stopped working one day. I've never had an issue programming homelink in the last three houses I've owned. Well, turns out that when I changed the garage opener light bulb, I used a regular LED bulb that causes an interference w/ the remote signal when the light is on. So, after I opened the garage door, when I was trying to drive away, I could not get the homelink button or my garage remote clicker to work because the LED light bulb was interfering w/ the signal. When I came home, the garage easily opened w/ homelink and the clicker b/c the lightbulb was off. So i switched to this non-interference Genie light bulb made specifically for garages and my homelink has worked perfectly ever since. Just sharing this in case some of you are having problems w/ homelink or other garage remote openers. |

Hey there,
I had a similar issue with syncing my vehicle to a rolling code garage. What worked for me was manually Reprogram the garage opener. Have you tried that method? If not, give it a shot and see if it helps. Last edited by georgebenzy7152; 10-26-2023 at 08:13 AM.. |

Most chamberlains have the learn button on the motor itself usually yellow or orange but Ive learned lately it can also be done from the digital pad on the wall, as it has a program remote button/option that works the same but at least that way you don’t have to rush down from a ladder and jump in to the car within the 30 seconds lol. Certainly helps to have the car in the garage. Btw, it’s not specific to bmw, almost every car I’ve ever owned is the exact same process for this. I guess homelink is the same in all these cars.

Pressing the start button 3 times quickly without foot on brake will put your bmw into service mode. It will not power down or time out. Once that is done you can erase any previously programmed garage door buttons by pressing and holding the most left (1) and most right (3) at the same time. Continue to hold them until you see the light blink in the mirror. Then release. If no remotes have ever been programmed you can skip that reset step. Now it time to program your remote it’s a 2 step process. First program your car to have the correct code to your garage door. This is where you press and hold the desired button on the mirror 1 or 2 or 3. While holding the mirror button press and hold the button on your garage door opener remote. Once the code is learned the light on the mirror will blink. Now you will need to press the learn button on your garage door opener. It maybe on the wall switch so you will not need to climb a ladder to press the one on the opener. When you press the learn button for the opener have someone else press the mirror button you previously programmed. That’s it should work first try.
