2021 x4 m40i exhaust options

I was wondering, what are you guys running in regards to an aftermarket exhausts , that doesn’t activate CEL.

Also, is aftermarket exhausts allowed on a lease car, esp when taking them in for a routine servicing etc?

I’m in IL if it helps.

Thanks.

Just got a x4 m40i myself and have been looking for a Simple exhaust setup for some more raw sound like a straight pipe bolt on axleback but there isn’t much out for the platform. The few I have found are unreasonably priced, IMO. For example, I had a macan S before this and MBRP makes a simple axle back that I wish they developed for this (x4 m40i) car.

Unrelated, but how are you liking the 40i compared to the Macan S? I'm coming from 2018 gts and my x3 40i should be arriving within a couple weeks.

In my most honest opinion, I think the m40i is better for me in every way. B58 is one of the best motors. It’s way more mod friendly and alottt cheaper to make even more power which at that point just blows the Macan (any trim!) out of the water completely, performance wise. Styling of the Macan is beautiful but the tech is definitely sub par to The M40i. Pdk is great,ZF8 is great. Macan handles great, m40i handles great.

I am trading in my 2016 Macan S on a new X3M40i. Should get built this coming week. I looked at the 22 Macan S and it was $14,000 more then my fully optioned M40i. The Macan is getting long in the tooth. This year they dropped the GTS engine in as the Macan S engine.

I would consider the midpipe from Ben at RG Sport. It removes the resonators and secondary cats. I bought this for my X3M but haven't installed it. I have the PSI midpipe, which is similar, on my M4 and love it. Dealer doesn't care. You'll only get a cel when you remove the primary cats on the downpipes. But then you can get around that with a defouler. Catless downpipes lead to smell and would be obnoxiously loud.

Exhaust for the X4M is different than M40i , to my understanding.

You're right. My bad. Active Autowerke and PSI have nothing. Super Sprint dies have several options for the 40i.

It would be great to show there is a demand to these companies and maybe they will provide a cost efficient option. Especially being that it would work for both x3 & x4 m40i cars, doubles the demand.

Hopefully some of the exhaust manufacturers will get this done.

I'd take one, shipped to Australia please!

They are a different original part number than a G20 sedan, but surely BMW are not going to make all different downpipes? It's just not efficient or cost effective for mass manufacturing?

Might just have to get myself a G20 one and see if it fits if nothing comes about

If your referring to downpipes then there are a bunch available for the g02 x4 m40i.

This sums up my sentiments exactly as well! (Coming from a '17 GTS). I like them both for different reasons, but at this point, the M40i is proving to be a much better daily driver (for me).

And yes, I spent all of two hours a month or so back shopping exhaust options for mine ('21 M40i) and concluded there isn't much out there at this time, unless you want to pony up some serious money. Figure I'll give it until next summer and look again.

I fabbed up my own exhaust system for my M40i, it's 3" after the down pipe that feeds into a Y-pipe 3" in dual 3" out and exits with dual 3.5" tips.Yes I understand that dual 3" exhaust pipe is a over kill but I was going for a deep exhaust tone.

Apologies , but what is a downpipe?

I don’t know much about exhausts

I just would like a nice exhaust sound, that isn’t too loud and just louder than the current exhaust with the valve open.

And lastly, what options are available?

Thanks.

The downpipe attaches to the exhaust of the turbo and connects to the midpipe. The downpipe usually houses the primary catalytic converter.

Example of a downpipe for a b58 engined bmw: https://www.rgsportshop.com/index.ph...1319&limit=100

The midpipe runs from the downpipe to approximately the rear axle. Some manufacturers also include a secondary catalytic converter in the midpipe. There are often resonators in the midpipes to reduce drone at low engine speed ~2-3k rpm which can be found annoying by some when cruising on a highway.

An axle back attaches to the midpipe and runs to the rear of the car. The axle back usually has a muffler or resonator of some sort.

There are some "cat back" aftermarket exhausts that include midpipes and run from the cat aka the downpipe all the way back to the rear of the car.
Example of a cat back exhaust:

https://x-ph.com/stone-exhaust-bmw-b...xhaust-system/

It is disappointing on the cost of the aftermarket for BMW compared to that for other manufacturers so often times a custom one off full exhaust piece can be made for less. I would expect that you could have a full catback exhaust made to your liking for around $2.5k for an G01/G02 M40i.

Less back pressure is good, do you have any pictures from under the car? What mufflers / resonators did you use?

Interesting, I have been thinking about a custom setup as well. Can you share pics of the exhaust? Sounds phenomenal !

Sigh, 4.5k for an exhaust system?

Anyone know where in the Chicago northwest suburbs I can get a prefab exhausts made?

Basically, my main goal is:

1.) Avoid cel
2.) decent exhaust sound like the one in the video attached
3.) easy to bolt back OE exhaust when returning the lease in 2.5 years.
4.) reuse existing pipe/tips etc to reduce costs , if possible.
5.) Anything else to consider?

Thanks

It's allowed. They won't care as long as it isn't causing an issue. Warranty will be fine as long as the problem isn't caused by your exhaust. You might even be able to talk to a service advisor upfront. Sometimes you can find a guy who can help you skip the plug in during service (if you tune).

I didn't have any mufflers on during that video, it was all free flowing.

Yes, I agree with rh more flow the better I just said that because some people will comment that the dual 3" exhaust is excessive for exhaust flow.

Here's a video of my exhaust with mufflers, it's hard to hear but it still sounds good. I'll make another one this week with a "fly-by" pass.
