Retro fit speed limit display

One of the few handy things that my car doesn’t have. Any way of retro fitting this? The car parks itself, but won’t tell me what the speed limit is!

Do you have nav and the kafas stereo camera behind the interior mirror? If so, you could try a VO coding I guess.. but you probably still need to buy FSC code.

If you have navigation, you should have this feature. In previous models, you had to have cameras in order to have the feature.

I have navigation, but also don’t have this feature. Is it through some setting? I have a 2019 if that’s makes a difference.

I’m not 100% certain of this, but a bmw spokesperson told me that speed limit comes with navigation now. If the instrument display is set to “reduced” info, it will not show the speed limit info. Go to my vehicle, idrive settings, displays and instrument panel and then change the setting to either standard or individual. If you have it, that will trim it on.

I think I may have been misinformed about speed limit info now being part of navigation. After looking at some pictures from cars at the dealer, the only ones that had speed limit info displaying also had the bmw safety button on the center stack which would indicate to me that you still need the cameras in the driving assistant package to get speed limit info.

In the US, speed limit info requires both Nav (ZPP or 609) and the Driving Assistance Package (ZDA). Go look it up in the pricing guide.

I'm guessing it needs ZDA because it probably uses the stereo cameras in the center rearview mirror.

I’ll have a look to see what cameras it has. The car has Navigation Professional, and the self parking feature (which is pretty cool!), so I’m guessing there are some cameras there.

Ok here is the thing, not sure if you know this but all 2019’s get that center button with the car, which is the safety features. All it has though is forward collision braking and pedestrian braking, no blind spot or lane keeping assistance. So I have 2 cameras above the rear view mirror standard. Do you think it could possibly be coded since I already have the hardware which are the cameras?

All UK versions, even base spec SE are like the 2nd photo, I assume it is for the adaptive Headlights?

Adaptive headlights might use a simpler camera than the Stereo kafas system used by lane keeping warning and the others. It's like that on older F series cars, and might be true now as well. Not sure with pedestrian break functions, if they also need that camera. On F series the radar from ACC is enough. I.e. no camera available to use for Speed limit recording in my case on my F30 without Driving Assistant.

If you have the right cameras, and Nav, you have the necessary hardware, but you also need an FSC code. I.e. like a license to enable the function. VO coding is not enough.

I would assume that the system could be enabled without cameras, but won't provide the expected information according to marketing material and owner's manual. Only static feed from nav system.

I have the cameras in the second photo.

So, can speed limit be retrofitted/ coded?

I can't tell without reading through the technical training guide. There is a G30 copy to find with google. Should be the same systems as for G01.
But as said before, it's not just a simple coding involves. You need to buy a FSC code as well.

(I'm away from my computer, to check it..)

Yes, I had this done 2 days ago. It requires an official FSC code imported via E-Sys then some coding with E-Sys and ISTA+.

PM if you want some further info.

Curious as to what the cameras have to do with it....

I have the Nav and the speed limit info comes up BUT it is wrong a lot. Shows 20 mph on some highways etc. What additional speed limit info is provided outside of the nav database?

The cameras read the road signs apparently. I’ve been quoted £290 to fit this, by a specialist. Will probably hang fire now, and stick the money towards the next car!

They do read the road signs. When you drive by a sign with a new speed limit the HUD changes just before you go by the sign. It's great when you say to yourself "Gee, I wonder what the speed limit is here."

Speed signs with black lettering on a white background work well, but sometimes there is a sign with a yellow background... they don't seem to be recognized by the camera.

They also pick up limits as 20mph in UK where there are school signs but limit is only supposed to apply when lights flashing.

Same here, pass daily out of school hours a 20 school sign and it always picks it up, I was in Germany in the Summer and they must have more standardised signs, passes a few like that and a clock symbol appears next to the speed limit displayed, there was also a lot more times the no overtaking symbol appeared whereas I haven't yet seen that come on in UK
