Appreciate any advice on selling friend's used M240i xDrive convertible...

Moderators - please move if this post doesn't belong here...

I'm hoping folks on this forum can help. I consider myself relatively knowledgable when it comes to purchasing vehicles. Maybe I'm not an expert or professional but am well-informed and generally make solid decisions when buying, selling, and/or trading-in vehicles. A good friend's father has had some serious health challenges in recent months and she will likely need to sell his 2018 M240i convertible. I haven't seen the vehicle, but it's my understanding it's metallic red/cognac, in good shape with low miles, and includes several options. I believe the vehicle was purchased a couple of years ago as a CPO for around $50k+ but don't have any confirmed specifics. I would also point out that I've done an online search and there aren't many of these convertible coupes w/in 100 miles and the comparisons are listed in the high $40k to $50k range. Not too bad for a five year old BMW 2 series coupe. We're in the DC suburbs and there are BMWs are everywhere and large number of dealerships.

Based on current market dynamics and the fact she doesn't have time (or experience) to properly market and sell a car, I've suggested she take it to two or three different dealerships (the local BMW, Carmax, and another luxury brand) to get prices, compare offers, and take the best one. She doesn't have the time to list and show a car and my guess is that, in this market, selling to a dealership and avoiding the hassle of selling on your own is well worth it. If any of the online "sell your car" estimates are accurate, I think she might be able to walk away w/ a check in the $35k-$40k range...but who knows?

All that said, I haven't actively shopped for a vehicle in the past couple years and all of my advice is based on what I'm reading in the news/online forums or seeing in various youtube videos on state of the car market. I'd appreciate any advice or thoughts folks might have. I think the goal is the most money but also the easiest (and fastest) process. Please tell me if I'm off base as I don't want to give her bad advice and cost her thousands.

Thanks all, much appreciated!

Sorry to hear about your friend’s father…

Seems like a good plan. Higher offers will likely come through Carvana, Carmax, Vroom or other venture capital backed companies. You might not get as much selling to a dealer.

Just remember that kbb and other market predictors and trackers are all out of whack right now. It’s best to get multiple bids and pick the one they feel most comfortable with.

If they were interested in the auction route bringatrailer.com is a good site for unique and limited run cars and might get the seller a bit more.

It should be very easy. Do not need to visit any dealerships at all.
Get a quote from KBB. There is a generic quote, and there is a KBB instant cash option. The latter is hooked up to dealerships. They will offer the exact amount shown by KBB instant cash. I got emails from 3 nearby BMW dealerships.
Get offers for carmax, carvana and vroom. In their case, I suspect they will feel happiest with Carmax - because you get the offer, it is valid for 7 days and you just drop in and complete the transaction. In my case I actually got the highest offer from Carmax but this varies.
Go with whatever is the best. The online process requires photos to be taken and uploaded on the app.

Having sold my M240 coupe a few months ago, I can concur that these cars are holding their value and then some. Mine was a 2017 and I sold it for more than I paid for it with about 50k miles on it. If the car has LSD or standard/stick transmission then its in even higher demand. Car color increases it significantly as many seek certain combos over others. If it were my car and I was just looking to sell, I would say try the KBB suggestion above and/or take it around 5 places - BMW Dealerships, a couple used car dealerships, and CarMax. These would be the easiest for sale without great risk. Tell them you are taking the car around and the highest offer gets the ride. Look for prices within 250 miles and take a hit for ease of sale. I think you're on the right track though.

Carvana, Vroom, and Carmax will give you different prices. One can be way out of whack low so make sure to check all three. Also, if your offer expires just run it again and you'll get a new number.

I took my Carmax offer for my 2018 330GT to the local BMW dealer and they matched it. That way it can stay in the BMW family via CPO which is nice.

Not necessarily, re: the bolded portion. They might, they might not - it's still up to the individual dealership on what they want to offer for your car. There is langauge in the offer to that effect, as well.

The KBB instant cash offer for my wife's 9 mo old leased Subaru Outback was a few thousand dollars more than what the local participating Chevy dealer actually offered us.

It is a good point. Yes, I guess they don't have to offer the same amount.
