Oil Change Interval on iDrive

When I decode the VIN on either of our X4s (see sig) they indicate an "Oil Change Interval" of 15,000km (=9,320 miles). My local dealer recently did a (paid) oil change on the 28i and iDrive was reset to 7,000 miles.

Q: Can the dealer choose what mileage is shown when oil change is reset? (I doubt it).

Q: What is your experience with the reset value of either model?

I am pretty sure the dealer reset the M40 to 10,000 miles a while back when I had my first oil change. Has something changed?

Did you find out why it was reset to 7000 miles?

Not really. But my SA has since told me that "the tech can choose what interval to reset to." Keep in mind his lips were moving when he told me this... The tech obviously follow BMW's guidelines on this.

I recently did an oil change myself on the 2.8i and went through the procedure for resetting the OCI. It showed 6,000 miles, or 12 months, to next oil change when I was done. Something has changed and I suspect it ties in with the timing chain issue on these N20 4-bangers.

In any event, I am out of free oil changes and plan to DIY every 5,000 miles going forward.
