Some back story.
I have a 2013 X3 with the N20 4 banger. In May the engine let go because of the timing guide. 123k on it....relatively low mileage considering.

We contacted BMW to sort this out cause a new engine is worth more than the vehicle and were basically told no.

So in the interim we sourced a used 2015 N20 with new guides, etc and had it installed.
Today I ran across a CA suit being considered by a firm out of London that targets this particular engine.

Using the site bmw-rp.com and entering the last 7 digits of my VIN, I have a 2013 X3 2.8i, it lists 4 issues that I believe are covered by extended warranty in the U.S. market.

[1] BMW ELW N20/N26 Turbo Oil Feed Lines
[2] BMW N20 Pressure Switch - Leak Diagnosis Module (NVLD)
[3] BMW ELW N20 Coolant Thermostat
[4] BMW N20 AND N26 Engine Timing and Oil Pump Drive

I have had two of these done at no cost, the Turbo Oil Lines and the Thermostat.

2012s don't have the same engine

This is very interesting. My VIN returned item #2 as an offer for reimbursement. I rather prefer a no cost warranty repair but I will settle for a reimbursement (free frequent flyer miles ) so I guess I can go ahead and book my service appointment...

I believe if you are showing symptoms of any of these problems and bring it to the dealer they will repair it at no charge. The web site is for people who paid out of pocket, either before BMW agreed to cover the issue or by going to a non-dealer for the repair. It just happens to allow you to search for coverable issues with your vehicle, which is why i posted the link.

It is excellent information. I am grateful. I'm not experiencing symptoms but my practice is to actively seek out and address warranty repair items. I really appreciate this.

I live in Canada and my engine was replaced. BMW covered some of the cost. But if I lived in the USA they would have covered all of it. Now does that make sense? It's the same engine built in the same factory but because of where I live I have to pay more? This is my first BMW and I'm not impressed

Do you know for a fact that they would have covered the entire cost if you were in the US? Did they tell you this? Was there some other mitigating factor (i.e. missing or incomplete maintenance history)?

I feel like we're missing some information with this. I'm not siding with BMW here, I've had my own issues with them denying warranty without enough substantiating information, but not this specific issue.

No I don't know this for a fact. But everyone who has reported this has had this problem in the USA has reported that they were covered by BMW.

Mean while I'm out of pocket expense's because I live north of the 49th.

I'm suing them. In Quebec we have the "small claims" court for case under 15K$.

makes me think about the 1st gen audi 2.0t, we had a lot of problem with them (cam follower, balancer shaft) and audi did the job to calm down the people, even after warranty.

hope bmw will do the same.

When I was at the dealer ship, there were two X3 at the same price :

- 28i M pack 2014
- 35i M pack 2013.

both same mileage.

im glad that I choose the 35i. The wife wanted the 28i since it was white, the 35i is blue, and she was tired of blue car (she got 3)

I heard once from a lawyer that in Canada the judge even help you in identifying what documents you need to provide for your case. A lot of big corporation got beaten up by small claim court. However, it is a small claim, don't expect much.

A while back a person won the case about bad paint against Chrysler in small claim court. However, another person loose similar case in the court of queen's bench, even with the help of lawyers.

While in Québec it's $15,000 Clear (before interest and no lawyer fees), in Ontario it's $35,000 Clear (before interest and no lawyer fees).

That should take care of the Timing Chain problem as well as anything else that could go wrong with the BMW.
