iDrive 7 vs iDrive 6: what are the differences?

Hi everyone, can someone explain the main differences between the two system?

I know that the head unit are completely different, but except for the differences in hardware what are the main differences in software and usability?
Any new feature worth upgrading?

iDrive 7 is a bit of a half implementation on the 2020 X3/4 (no remote software upgrade, limited Personal Assistant functionality) so in that regard, it isn’t really an improvement on iDrive 6, which was already very good.

I do prefer the new Live Cockpit Professional instrument cluster, though, which is the biggest difference that iDrive 7 brings.

Being able to customize the home screen widgets to show nav, weather, phone, sports displays. The customization is limitless.

As much as some will look at details and decide ID6 is better... give it a few months...ID7 will look much more modern. Live Cockpit Pro that often comes with ID7 it is not a hybrid mixture of mixture of old fashioned hardware and a software dash. ID6 with hybrid dash will look dated so soon (even now) even if you can justify why it's better in some respects.

Are you talking about software updates to ID7 or just "as we get used to it, it will seem more modern than ID6?"

I'm talking about the mix of ID7 and the all software dash as a combination. It's the dash that looks old hat. I expect software updates will come eventually following a dealer update.

Hi, Can anyone saying exactly what’s the difference between a full ID7 implementation towards the one in X3/4? After having my new X3 30e one week I got the information from my dealer about the remote software upgrade although BMW makes a huge thing about this function as part of the ID7 and do not mention anything about a limited installation in the X3 in any promotion material. It’s also described in the car specific User Manual exactly how to deal with it! Also Caring Car seems to be missing?

Any ideas as to if that's unlockable via the coding that some folks do to their setup?

I think it's the fixed silver 'rings' on the Idrive 6 instruments that will look dated soon, rather than the actual display.

Why do they even have these rings??

Is there a backup assistant? I find that surprisingly useful on my M340i.

Nah, rings give the speedo some dimension instead of a boring flat black screen.

The dash on ID6 already looks dated as it's a hybrid half-way house to a full digital dash. The current full digital dash will look dated when the next innovation/update comes along.

Sometimes "new" doesn't look better at first but then "old" looks dated soon enough. I used to think the F25 looked little different to the G01, now it looks to be from a different era - styling cues change, even if they are only subtle they can make a big difference.

No, it's missing the hardware.
