In Southern California here, so I only get 91 too. The Stage 1 91 oct tune had a very significant boost in performance. Definitely worth it. I’d say the jump from stage 1 to stage 2 wasn’t as big as going from stock to stage 1, but I did it anyway and would still recommend it.

I've read some mixed things about 2020 DME unlocking. Does BM3 work for a 2020 m40i right now?
(Noob to ECU tuning)

Not if you have the latest BMW software update. You can still get a custom dyno tune. But currently there is not OBD tunes for the nee software. This applies to more models than just the M40i

FYI for those of us in AZ, SoCal, etc with crummy 91 gas, there is a Stage 1 ACN91 map, which is a bit less aggressive up top than the regular Stage 1, 91 map. If you buy the bundle for $50 extra you can have as many maps as you want and try the regular 91 octane map and the ACN to see if you're pulling timing, knocking, etc. You can also run an e30 map which will make GOOD power.

Can you tell us what the noticeable gains were on the stage 1 91 octane if you can remember? Specifically hp, lag, and mpg? Thanks!

Thanks for the info. What is the ACN map? I figured if I get the 91 stg1 that would work for Arizona...

There is a regular 91 OCT stage 1 map, and an ACN (crummy gas) stage 1 91 octane map. From what I gather they're very similar, but the ACN runs more conservative timing towards redline. I'd assume it's 10 or 15 hp down from the regular 91 map, but safer. I may end up running an E30 map and throwing in some E85 which I found over at the Chevron station at I-10 and Elliot. Even the normal ACN Stage 1 feels great though.

Thanks! I think I'll be doing this. Does buying the bundle give all the maps, or just a selection of B58 maps?

Looks like all of the available B58 off the shelf maps. There are quite a few - it's well worth doing the bundle! You could do the ACN map, datalog, and if you're running clean pulls with no timing issues you could try the regular 91 octane map. If that pulls clean even better!

I am not familiar with BM3 - do they do a low torque map and a high torque one ?

The reason I ask is I had two maps for a Golf GTi Edition 30 years ago - one low torque and one high ...

Both produced exactly the same peak but the delivery was more exciting to me on the low torque as it was linear, no thump in the back of the seat at 3K rpm, just more and then loads higher up. I loved it ... the high torque one came in with a massive rush at 3K but then went flatter high up.

I am sure the high torque one was 'quicker' as more power was around sooner, but I left the lower torque one on as it was to me, more exciting and great fun to rev out.

I would go for a map which gave maybe 20bhp low/mid range but then gave loads from 4500 upwards.

Do BM3 cater for picky people like me ?

Hi
do you mean that even if I have a 2018/19 M40i, if the dealer has updated the software as part of normal servicing, then I can't use any OBD tune?

Im not sure about the older years and how the software affects it. But if it is the same software then id easily assume that its the same result.

Yes MHD and any other tuner you can thing of. I am new to BMW so BM3 and MHD I assume are biggest brands. So any smaller co. forget about it.
Honestly I dont blame BMW for this they want to protect whats theirs they figured out a good way to finally "keep us out" of their DME / software and whatever is inside.
But this always happens with big companies Apple for example if anyone jailbreaks their phone Apple will release a "update to fix stuff" its only to block the jailbreak but there is so much focus on Apple that sometime the jailbreak literally happened overnight.
Here our focus on the M40 and M340 B58 for the 2020 model year is minimal thats why we are waiting.

You can have one that limits torque in the first couple of gears (it's an option in the configuration of each map), or you could ask ProTuningFreaks to send you a map with lower requested torque in the midrange. Either of those would work, or have a remote tuner change your OTS map to be a bit less aggressive in the midrange. Definitely a solution for what you're looking for with this platform.

That's useful to know, thanks.

I just want *only another 20-30bhp low down, then it can go mad after 4K
