Anyone with the most recent software update from Nov 2019 will NOT be able to use BM3 via OBD. The ECU can be unlocked, but must be removed from the car and sent to the tuner.
Some owners may be lucky and driving a 2020 M40i from Sept build onwards that retains the older software.

Both BM3 and MHD have no foreseeable fix to bypass this latest BMW DME lock.

See thats strange because my M40 is a 11/19 prod date and I was able to flash just fine. Might be that different regions got different software versions? Or maybe mine just wasn't updated prior to shipment

Is there anyway to check easily which software i am on. I ordered me car in December and got it in February so i am going to assume it is locked but would like to 100% confirm it. Is there a way within the settings of the X3 to check it??

Vehicles will get whatever software was available near the production of the vehicle. You will never have a vehicle up to the same month software update when delivered. Unless there is a stop sale or recall of some sort needing to be done before delivery to customer.

Alright thanks, i just placed the order for the OBD ENET wire and downloaded the BM3 app on my laptop to see if I'm able to flash. Fingers crossed if it's still possible. Will report back on it

Me too I am going to check with my local tuner. Going to go with a dyno tune and we will see what options they have.

So i connected the OBD to the laptop and ran the BM3 program, nothing happens besides it saying it detected the OBD agent. Showing my VIN OBD agent version and saying the vehicle is up.

What am i looking for to tell if i can flash it or not? Or was i suppose to do something else after the connection was made?

Any help
Thanks in advance

Yeah i just toke care of it. Unfortunately i have the latest software. They told me to either send the DME or wait for an unlock. So i guess I'll be waiting for an Unlock. They confirmed they are working on it and "hope to have a solution in the near future"

Lol so again pretty much to what we have been saying for the past week in this thread. There is nothing out besides a custom tune or sending out your ECU. I would rather get a custom tune at that point on a dyno.

If anyone has any actual information in the future on the new software updated DME being able to be tuned please share it for us.

Not sure how NEW you are to BMW Fxx flashing and Gxx flashing, but becareful with those so called "custom tunes" lol. Sometimes they're not custom at all and not having a platform leaves a lot to be desire.

I'm new to this platform let alone BMW in General so i have a lot of catching up to do. I'm learning as i play with the car and read all the stuff. I was mind blown when i learned about coding the car to do certain things. I found it to be sick lol. So for me this like getting a brand car all over again lol

Heads up for anyone who can flash, all the OTS maps dropped today.

Just flashed stage 2 91 and test drove it, it's like nothing I've ever felt before...

BM3, and this is for pre 11/19 software afaik.

Not to worry though, there still seems to be some kinks to work out with these maps, so I'm sure by the time you guys get them they'll be much more polished.

Some owners may be lucky and driving a 2020 M40i from Sept build onwards that retains the older software.

Both BM3 and MHD have no foreseeable fix to bypass this latest BMW DME lock.
Does this only apply to the 2020 M40i or does it include all model years? If my 2018 M40i gets the latest software update, will my ECU be locked too? Thanks.

when i spoke to BM3, they told me BMW updates the software. So you basically have to tell them NOT to update it. Now i don't know if it's a mandatory update but you should definitely find out when you bring it in to service. Knowing dealers, they usually tell you ahead of time because it requires the car to sit there. I personally don't know how long The process takes, as i already have a 2020 and mine came with the latest software.

Please give more details. How does it drive? Is the ride quality compromised or does it drive as smooth as stock? Does your car have the B48 or B58 engine?
