Update: got the car back yesterday. Radiator blinds are on and closed. Engine light is off. Car seems to be fixed. They say the part is still showing backordered and showed up unexpectedly. Must be a weird supply chain/tracking issue. Happy to have my car back and in working order. Now to file a request for downtime reimbursement from BMW!
Thanks again to all for your help. I hope anyone else with this issue has a fast resolution. |

They were expecting the headliner to take at least month and it showed up with the rest of the parts unexpectedly. John |

This issue still seems to be happening. My boss and I both purchased an M40i three weeks apart last May. His failed at the beginning of this month and then mine failed today. Parts still come from Germany and it takes a few weeks. Service department said this is a common issue and they expect most 2018 models to have them fail. Not recall worthy I guess since it's not a safety issue.

I bought mine last May too and just got the code today. For reference it’s 13820A and 13820B that what my code reader read. I’m guessing left and right.
Car has 7400 miles. |

Went to the dealership and it is the broken actuator. Since they are stuck open, I can drive the car without issues while waiting on the parts. Unfortunately it's a few weeks before they come in and another trip back to get it installed. Fun car, but a lot of annoying trips to the dealer in the first year.

Took my wife's 2018 M40i to the dealership. Mechanical actuator failure in the closed position. No word on parts. I am pissed. This is my first and last BMW.
5 miles from the dealership and a tire pressure monitor goes bad. No parts. I have the dealership rob a vehicle on the lot to fix. Actuators fail in the open position 2 months ago. Dealership re-initializes but says this fixed 95% of the issue (this is a bunch of crap to get out of replacing obviously) Actuators are now failed in the close position. Dealership will not let me bring home to put in the garage and give me a loaner car. X3 is sitting outside waiting. BMW is joke. |

My shutter parts we're back ordered and took a month to come in. Dealer repeatedly
stated safe to drive (service light sometimes on, sometimes not). Getting the work done in 2 weeks. Have to leave car for entire day so this will require a loaner. I'll be taking a s*** ton of pictures of the loaner before I leave. They accused me of curbing a wheel the last time I had a loaner and it was a huge argument. I only drove it from the shop to my garage (never parked it on the street). Not the kind of treatment I expect from BMW. The service advisor needed to go to bat for me that it was old damage. |

Just saw this thread. I had the same issue come up and posted under another thread https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...php?p=24928822
Sounds like there are many others out there. I'm guessing that's what's causing the backorder... BMW needs to step it up a bit if there's so many others out there with the same problem for some time now but still have the parts backordered. |

I may be just a nervous nancy but has anyone who had the failure changed out the front grills? Everyone stock factory? Do you press the sport button or eco button often which would change the grill shutting or opening more? Stupid questions but I would like to get a rough idea maybe. Mine has not failed yet but I bet it will. 2018 with a October build date here.

I have been waiting a month for the Active Shutters. We hit a deer back in April and the Shutters shattered (along with a bunch of other stuff). The car is being repaired at a Certified BMW Collision Center and I was told that production was delayed while a component (I assume the motor) was being either modified or resourced. Supposedly, they are now being shipped again, but we are still waiting.

Just got my wife's X3 M40i back after being in the shop 3 weeks waiting for new shutters. so glad to turn in the loaner base X3. What a POS. Hopefully the last major issue with this vehicle. If not, it will be my first and last BMW.

This just happened to me too. I purchased my 2018 X3 used the end of May with 13000 miles on it. Come mid June my check engine light comes on and it's the active kidney grille I guess the shutter is stuck in a open position. The shop did give me a loaner but it's still back ordered. The estimated time to receive the part will be the end of July. I haven't even made my first payment on it. I hope this is not what I should expect from a BMW since it is my first one?!The good news is at least for 2 months I won't be putting miles on it but it's still a bummer getting a new car and not being able to enjoy it.

Another me too... My 2018 X3 parked in the garage of dealer service department for 2 weeks waiting for the parts. I was told the parts is backordered without ETA. The dealer was able to give a loaner, until yesterday. They came up with a temporary workaround: somehow manually set the failed radiator blinds "open". The check engine light is still ON; I was told to just drive with it ON. They are in a hurry to take the loaner back, which they claim not being paid for by BMW. Pushed me to contact BMW US for a rental. I doubt where this will end up at; mostly have to drive a car with check engine light on for a while!

Hi all,
I had the check engine light on this morning on my 2018 x3 G01 30i, and I took it to New Century BMW in Alhambra, CA. I was told that the car grille ventilation shutters are not working, and replacement parts are backordered and they are at least a few weeks away. In addition,, they need to keep my car in the interim time, as the check-engine-light is still on. Instead of giving me a loaner car, they actually rent me a car from Enterprise with a meager BMW daily allowance of USD36 only. This sucks! The service advisor told me that they don't loan out loaner cars for more than a few days, as he claims that the dealership owns the loaner cars, and they will be sold later, and thus they are subjected to very strict time and mileage limitations. Is this daily BMW dealership practices? BTW, I didn't buy my car from them as I just relocate to LA recently. Thanks, scgeek. Last edited by scgeek; 09-10-2019 at 08:33 PM.. |

Well, I had the car in last APRIL for an inspection and the CEL. Brought it to Bayside BMW who, up until now, has been pretty stellar.
Unfortunately, although I did get the state inspection they simply wrote that the car "needs a special order part", I wasn't told what it was nor when it would be in, and I STILL haven't heard from them. CEL has been on and off intermittently since then. When Bayside treated me well I told people, I also said I'd be back if that's changed. Well, it has: Six months without communication has got me convinced I need to try someone else. I don't know what's changed at Bayside, maybe the ownership or the people running the service department, but I have choices. I mean, SIX MONTHS for a "special order part" without anything other than "not in yet" when I ask (which is often)? Has ANYONE waited six months for a part? Sorry, just had to vent. |

I know that. I just meant I haven't had any issues with my F30 in general as far as the whole car goes.

Anyone else get this? Wondering if the warranty extension was due to the default flaps or from the repair. |
