Anyone cross shopping X3MC and M550i

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Curious as I kind of am. Both cars in the low $80s

Both weight around the same and provide a lot of cargo. Both have 500+ HP and AWD

Obviously one is built by M while the other is not. Looks like performance will be about the same on both, and even on a track it's probably similar due to aerodynamics and center of gravity.

M550i has a nice V8 and more torque plus more luxurious interior and I am sure smoother ride while the X3M is more brute M.

If M550i had a few non "old man" colors I would really be considering it. But both the interior and exterior options are so BORING. I can't find a color build I would be happy with. And it's just such a long car (under 190" is my preference).

M550 weighs less, has a V8, gets better (advertised) MPG, and gets iDrive 7 already for 2020. But downside it has less ///M badges.

Different philosophy. M cars are build
For the track. M550
Is not
So x3 M will corner better but will never be allowed at the track since clubs ban suvs. 550 has better ride and is an autobahn cruiser. They should really flip. X 3 should get a v8 and comfortable suspension. 550 should be more M tuned

Owned a M5 F90 for 2 years. Spent time (wife ordered) in a X3M Comp. Totally different animals. Also owned a X5M for 2 years. M5 destroys both in acceleration and handling. Interior M5 = X5M. Both > X3M Comp. . M5 = X5M in Comfort. X3M tbd. Utility X5M & X3M destroys M5.

Also owned two different X5’s with DHP. One V8. One 6. Not even close to a true M in driving dynamics. Nice for what they are, but I’ll never buy another BMW that is not a True M that was designed (not just tested) on the Ring. True M is a different animal.

Looking forward to receiving the X3M in 2 weeks.

Please tell us the ride quality of the x3m when it arrives. Especially compared to the f90 m5. If not comfy enough for family trips, i will get an m5.

Ride quality is something that is too subjective for a random interweb forum stranger to decide for you. I’ve had the X3M C for a month now, and I think the ride is great - better than I expected. You or Your wife might hate it and think it’s unbearable! Please go drive one and make that decision. Inventory is available or on the way in many markets.

For family trips, it’s probably not the best. Gas mileage is terrible. I’m getting around 15 mpg on the first 3-4 tanks of gas, and I’m still in break-in, so not even driving very aggressively.

Good luck on whatever you choose!

Anyone comparing an X3M/X3MC to the x5 M50i? I know the M50i isn't a true M vehicle but that twin turbo V8 is a beast.

I was looking at an X5 50i M-Sport pack before I got the X3M. It’s a very nice SAV - faster than you can use on the road and handles very well, while still being comfy. I like the interior redesign a lot over the previous gen X5’s, but the virtual dash is meh (IMO). I’d guess the X5 M50i will be very similar with a bit more power.

The X3M is a different animal. Smaller, more agile, quicker, less lux, performance dialed way up. Comparably equipped, the X5 M50i will be a lot more expensive, at least $15k. Like the M550i sedan, it’ll cause you to question whether you really need/can use the X5M, and why not save $$ (just like all the jabber about X3 M40i on this forum).

It’s worth cross-shopping, but only to help you figure out what you really want. I don’t think they really compare/compete.

Cheers!

J

M550i is a better daily driver, the X3M is a vehicle for the person who has a M3/M4 daily driver and needs a bigger vehicle for family or winter. Very different philosophies and how they drive. Think X5 M50i and M550i vs X3M and M3. It really is more like this. X5M will be more like the M5.

The M550i was at the top of my list before I decided I wanted an SUV. Once that decision was made, it was the X3MC vs Jag SVR. My current car at the time bit the dust so I couldn't wait for either the BMW or the Jag. I went with a used X5M.

I have read a lot of comments about the harsh ride of the X3M but it seems to me that those comments are coming from folks that prefer a more luxury-car-like ride. I drive my car in sport + on all settings and don't think it is too harsh at all. O and I am riding on 22s as well, stock suspension not lowered.

I will be driving the X3MC and M5C at the M-Town event on Tuesday and am very interested to see how they compare to the X5M. I firmly believe the X3MC and M5C are great cars but the current gen X5M is great too, at least in my biased opinion. I think the Jag SVR is underrated but I suppose I should remember this is a BMW-centric forum.

Problem is the SVR with the same options is almost $5,000 more. Yes it has a V8 but performance will be almost identical and you are dealing with a company in a lot of financial uncertainty. I believe in 3-4 years resale of the X3MC will be the same or higher as SVR even though SVR cost a lot more up front.

I haven't driven the SVR but I was more interested in the engine due to the supercharger. That was before some of the feedback indicating the S58 has a bit more lag than expected.

But you weren't even asking about the SVR originally. If mid 80's is your desired price point, have you considered a low mileage 2018 X5M? The length is over 190" but less than the 5 series. Just a thought. One nice thing about buying M cars used is that most have all of the options so you really just need to find the color combo you want.

If BMW NA would allow the M50i to be ordered with the 3rd row, I'd consider it. But since they won't, might as well wait for the X5M if you want an X5.
