These things have a brake pedal? Whaaaaaaaaa? Say it isn't so. Italy is a beautiful country to drive in. Roads here in the north are pretty good, and it's not a police state. Ergo, cops (the few you see on the street) don't have radar on the dash. And if they do pull over to setup a speed trap, they have to put out signs that warn you 100 meters before you roll up on them. Viva l'Italia! Who needs brakes?

my E71 X650i, same driving routes and styles, gets me 15mpg

But hey, gas price is coming down folks so relax.
I hear ya. I always felt like my M3 inhaled gas.

Fortunately, you don't buy M cars for fuel efficiency

The real concern is range, not MPG, for me.

I go on long road trips all the time - just got back from a 3500-mile jaunt through Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota... the range on the X3 M is actually bad enough to induce range anxiety. I don’t always take interstates. County and state roads. Sometimes you go 200 miles without seeing a gas station.

My F90 M5 is averaging 24 on the highway here in SoCal and she is a heavy gal at around 4,300 pounds. I know that most people who buy M vehicles are not worried about gas mileage, I know I was not when I transitioned from my F80 M3 to my current M5. Around town I stay around 17 miles to the gallon and on the freeway the best I have done is 26 on a long trip. With a mixture of driving 22 mpg is the average. One would think the X3M would do better but maybe its the aerodynamics of the vehicle.

Our M5 is our fun (third vehicle) vehicle and is driven on the weekends. We bought it over a new Porsche 911 S. The wife of 32 years said she was not comfortable riding in it (911) and she looked me straight in the eyes and stated, " If you think I'm riding in this car to Vegas or our weekend get away your crazy". She also felt the same way in the 2012 Corvette Z06/Z07. I have a work vehicle issued to me so my work pays for the gas. With that being said it can get old spending more time at the gas pump filling up. The wife wants a X3 and she is the frugal one of the bunch. It will be hard time selling her on the gas mileage. Looks like we are back to the X3M40i. Truth be told she said the X3M40i was fast enough and did not need the speed or performance.

I have had many friends that have had performance vehicles that were getting under 15 mpg and after the honeymoon was over they traded it.

Expecting our X3M Comp without panoramic roof to weigh in less than 4500lbs, so your F90 still has about 150-200lbs less weight in city traffic for acceleration where it matters most. On Hwy no doubt the aerodynamics of your M5 should allow improved efficiency over our X3M, everything else including driving style being the same. Back in 2014 I looked at HP required for different constant speeds on the Hwy, where aerodynamics take precedence and weight plays less of a role, and this is where you would shine, esp at speeds 90mph and up. Take 90mph as an example - the 550i needed about 50HP to maintain speed in this simulation, whereas the X3 35i needed about 70HP. At 110mph, the 550i needs abt 84HP, the X3 - 118HP.

What I don't know, does a 6cylinder 500HP engine producing 118HP use the same amount of gas as a 300HP 6 cylinder?

X3M40i vs X3M mileage wise, I doubt you get 1mpg better on X3M40i driven the same manner.

Yes my guess is they are sand bagging it to be conservative. Most likely will be better unless driven hard. Mine started production today so we will see. Same experience with my Alpina, the true numbers are much better and I average 22-23 easily without a lead foot.

That is not so good. Roughly what my Macan GTS got. Now my 328D gets around 45 on Highway around 80 MPH and can go higher up if I drop down to around 70 MPH.

Diesels are simply incredible when it comes to gas mileage. From the reviews I've seen, the X3M40d is not a boring SUV by any means. But at the end of the day, I crave the explosive power of a gasoline engine. Well, that is until I find a practical electric with better performance to take its place.

I'm at about 1300 miles now and I'm averaging 16 mpg, right around what I was expecting. Not great but I can live with it especially given fuel prices now. In my E92 M3 I was getting 17 mpg same driving habits.

Of note, the computer average MPG has been exactly matching hand calculated numbers on fill ups my last 3 fills. I don't think I've ever had a car that the computer was accurate, which is kind of cool.

Last I checked I was at about 11 MPG. I’m up to 900 miles so I’ll look again.

It seems that no matter how I drive it I get 11-12.

I would be ecstatic with 16!

Edit - I’ve only recently gotten up to 5k rpms and the 11-12 was 3k and under. I am 200 miles away from the break in service which can’t come soon enough.

I’m also loving these gas prices I have not seen in over a decade.

I'm driving mostly highway miles lately. Speeds 70-110 ish, probably averaging 85. Thank you COVID. I am certainly not babying it. Try opening it up and live a little. I hit 6k a couple times during break in and a lot of 5k

Ha ha. I intend to keep it for a while so I’m doing my best to adhere to the procedure.

Only 209 miles to go!

And yes, mine is mostly in town driving and I haven’t done many long trips on the highway.

I never hear it talked about, but there is a MPG meter in the lower cluster which shows current MPG. You can get to it with a few clicks of the button at the end of the stalk. I stopped looking at mine

Easily the worst thing about our amazing X3M's is the gas mileage! This beast is THIRSTY, all of the time!! I do 75% city, drive her hard and, as expected, getting 12.4 mpg. One tank, drove her only for best gas mileage, always shifting before 3k rpm and still only managed 14 mpg. Moral of the story: We DID NOT purchase this vehicle for its outstanding MPG, so drive her hard and enjoy the low gas prices!!

Yeah I notice only about a 1-2 mpg diff when babying it vs flogging it so sweep those revs whenever you want!

It seems horrible, but our Pilot was only getting 1-2 more mpg and takes forever to get up to speed and handles like a pig. Now that gas prices are down, not feeling too bad about it. Before the enviro-jerks go nuts, we live reasonably close to work and probably use less overall gas than your Prius driving in from the ‘burbs daily.

There is a huge difference in my mpg varying with whether the settings are in "efficient" or the other two sport settings. I have been averaging 17 or so in suburban driving (close to 20 highway) in efficient, and it drops to around 12-13 on back roads in the sport settings. Seems to me they gave us choices that actually aren't bad, given the size and power of the beast!

I guess my surprise with the mpg when I had a X3 30i courtesy car was true! Somehow it's barely getting 19-20 mpg with that 4 banger, mainly highway driving too... I just couldn't wrap my head around it at the time because I remember the same engine in the F30 could get close to 30!

But for the competitors in this segment, Alfa Quad also averages about 16 (C&D tested), and the GLC 63s AMG is even worst at 14 mpg average... (also C&D tested)
One exception is probably Macan. Our GTS average about 18.5 mpg through out the past year of ownership. Probably due to the sleeker body, but does come with sacrifices in space and utility...

Don't understand the X3 30i mpg's. My wife has one and is averaging 25 in mixed driving for 6,000 miles and about 30 highway. Something must have been out of spec.

Could also be the car was newly added to the fleet, only got 70 miles when I picked it up
