Same exact sentiments. I was thinking to myself, if this was debadged, how in the world would I be able to tell the difference? Tailpipes??!!

Are you suggesting that the M version of the X3 and X4 should look like an M vehicle?

Blasphemy!!!

Exterior Design

Of course everyone's going to like the way the X3M/X4M drives.

BUT, BMW M Division really missed a great opportunity here by not tweaking the Exterior Design by adding bulging wheel arches with wider wheels, perhaps a different more aggressive hood. They could've offered really cool more classic M looking rims. Included carbon fiber mirror caps and what not. It just doesn't look aggressive enough and it looks identical to the 440i M which is a really nice ride. I can't forget the “Competition” badging is ridiculous.

But hey, at least they finally made it right!?

I can agree with almost everything stated but then I get swayed, with every box ticked its $82k. Yes the X5M is a better way to do an M SAV but at $30k more...ugh. That's an entirely different price bracket for people. IMO, its a perfect chick SAV and will definitely shop it for the wife.

Well, that's exactly what it is. A fake "M" with an abundance of "M" badges, pretty sad.

I, personally, would much prefer a GLC 63 AMG to this X3M. The AMG GLC is a good example of making a vehicle look classy and much stronger than it's non-performance mates. But for BMW loyalists, I'm sure this X3M is a ton of fun to drive

You and I will always be able to tell the difference. 99 percent of people out there can't. The M3 looks like a 3 Series to most people.

You missed the key word, MEANT I didn't say the new M cars were understated, but that the purpose, or at least in the past, that the purpose of M cars was to never have large design changes, an M car was supposed to be understated in design, with small changes, but not many, and nothing too noticeable or in your face. They were racecars built for the road, they would look like sleeper vehicles, but then floor them or take them around a corner, and their true character would come out.

Here's an E39 M5, a prime example of how M cars were known to be understated in their design, below that is a photo of a 540i, barely any exterior details were changed, but there were some subtle ones like exhaust and slight air intake changes, but overall still understated and subtle.

The point of my post was to highlight how people are expecting radical design changes to a car that is already produced, just because their is an M version, when in fact, M cars were never meant to be radically different in design, it was always about the powertrain and mechanical changes and the driving experience.

And its not just the E39, the E34, E28, E36, E46, F10, and even the E60 a car that was known for standing out in non M-form even (because of the radical bangle design) had only subtle design changes, nothing too radical or different from its "pedestrian" version in which it was based on.

Now that I look again I agree it could be more aggressive. But it still looks pretty nice. I wouldn't call the SQ5, GLC63, or Macan Turbo particularly aggressive looking. All these cars, particularly the Macan, look just like the base model with different wheels and quad exhausts.

Don't get a boring color like grey or white either. I've always loved an ///M division product in blue.

I do agree that the X3M and X4M are not differentiated enough from the X3 and X4 to justify the price difference for me and my personal driving style.

The new 2020 X4 M40I is rumored to have 385ish horsepower. Add a solid tune on top of that and you can save yourself 15K...

Take the weight difference into consideration and you might actually not be too far off given that price difference.
