Is tire rotation covered under the 3 year maintenance program?

My M40i is in for it's first dealer oil change today (8300mi). I asked the service adviser to have the tires rotated and was told this isn't covered under normal maintenance. Truth or lie. Thanks

I had my local Zippety mobile service garage do it for "wicked cheap", as we say in these parts, at 5k miles (due for my 10k service in a couple of months.) I will never give an automobile dealer tire rotation revenue.

With 20" and 21" options being staggered, the only 'rotation' folks can do with either is left to right... How much value to 'rotate' the tires? I assume our tires are not directional so left/right swap is possible...

Sorry if this question sounds silly but this is my first time with staggered set up...

Even if you can rotate left and right, aren't tires directional?

Thanks for the info all. I also wouldn't pay the dealer for rotating tires. I have a compressor for that stuff.

Just as an FYI - Discount Tire rotates tires for free, even if you didn't buy tires from them. I'm in an out in usually 30 minutes and have used their services in 3 states the past 10 years. I'd never pay for a tire rotation after using them!

I was going to mention that.. Though I'm a long term customer with them for other vehicles.

Do you guys typically have the fronts switch to the rears to increase wear life?

They are directional, so there isn't anything you can rotate. I can't remember the last time I had a BMW that wasn't staggered+directional, so I've never gotten tire rotations done whether free or not.

EDIT: The tires are not in fact directional as I thought -- see below. They can be swapped side to side.

But you can move each from one side to the other while on the same axle.

Not if they are directional! Unless you mean having the tires dismounted and remounted after being flipped (i.e. what was on the outside of the rim is now on the inside of the rim, and is now on the opposite side of the vehicle).

Does anybody remount and rebalance tires in order to rotate?

You'd have to remove the tires from the rims to move them side to side. Some people will do that for tires that have high tread wear ratings if rotations are really justified to achieve the full tire life. But for sport/summer tires, I don't think it's worth the extra hassle. That is a lot of extra abuse to the tires and wheels.

The Alenza tires that came on my 2018 M40i (21") and current 2019 M40i (20") both stated on sidewall "OUTSIDE". I take that to mean that as long as the "OUTSIDE" word is facing out, then it doesn't matter if the tire is on the left or right side.
I contacted Bridgestone and that's what they stated to me. Should be the same for any brand.

I'm wondering about this too. If there is no 'arrow' on the tire then they are not directional, and hence can be swapped left to right?

So in that case, it is not a directional tire and can be rotated side to side.

I forgot to mention that the Bridgestone tech said the same thing.

I'm watching the wear on my X5 40e tires very carefully. If it looks like I'm going to hit the 4/32 wear limit before lease turn in, I'll put a set of non run flats on until just before turn in and switch back to the OEM RF tires. At 10K, the rears had 2mm more wear than the fronts, so I had the Dealer switch front to back at the annual service. Charged me $29.95. Tried hard to sell me re-balance and wheel alignment, which I politely declined. It was worth 30 bucks as it didn't take the three hours I would have spent taking it to Discount Tire--although that IS where I buy my non RF's (for 528i).

I think they tell us NOT to rotate just so they wear faster and need replacement.

I have always rotated my past BMW tires front to back- X
About every 5,000 miles in the driveway with a jack and jack stand

Isn't that the truth. They wouldn't rotate my tires the other day under the maintenance program but they sure pushed hard for an alignment which would have been out of pocket of course.

I had the dealer rotate mine last month - when my X3 was in for a covered oil change and diagnosis of my active grill issue. I agree I wouldn't go to the dealer just for a tire rotate, but when in for something else, there is something to be said for convenience, already having the loaner car, etc
