Ahhh...so much better. Just unplugged and went for a test drive. No more drone around 2k RPM in Sport. It would give me headaches on the highway and reminded me of a bad aftermarket exhaust. I would use Comfort and EcoPro to avoid the drone (probably not a bad thing!).

I also did this with my old MKVI Golf R. VW called it the soundaktor and it was a little hockey puck device that vibrated the frame. It mostly just buzzed. Pulled the device out and could hear the turbos and no more buzzing.

I will definitely be doing this!

The constant drone whaa whaa whaa whaa whaa is unbelieveably a painful experience. I am pretty much deaf and this resonance makes my hearing aides cycle something horrible.

I bought beemercode to turn this off. I don't think it really worked. I hope this does the trick.

Thanks for the info!

I've had mine coded off for a while because my speakers start to rattle with ASD on. The dealer has already replaced half of my HK speakers for various rattles so between ASD and shitty roads it's hard to prevent it from happening again. I'm hoping with ASD off they won't rattle as fast

Since my engine is much smaller....I don't think the 30i has this feature activated.

ASD is only on the i6 M40i. It doesn't exist on the x30i (or x30d, I assume).

You've never understood that people have preferences?

I found it fun, but at best, unnecessary, this car has a great natural exhaust sound. If I'm not listening to the engine, I'm listening to music and I want the noise floor as quiet as possible. Music is more important to me than fake engine sound.

I didn't have a choice but to disable it since I added a sub. To answer MechX3M40i's question, it sounds like a constant humming/droning.

So is the grey connector used for the ASD small amp actually connected to all 15 HK speakers? I took a second look at the pictures and there seems to be more than a dozen wires... If true, Not sure the logic behind why the rear seat passengers or the trunk area need that sound effect...

So that all riding in the car, even pets or vermin, know that they are riding in a powerful car driven/tamed by a manly man or womanly woman as the case may be.

This is very interesting.
For my M240, I had to install ASD bypass harness.

https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1202389

If I just disconnect the connector from ASD module, I lose all the sound.

I guess BMW redesigned the wiring for ASD so the ASD is harnessed in parallel to the other sound system. This is very good.

From the connector pin out, the ASD sound is piped to left and right of both front and back speakers.

Anyone know if fuse 218 is for ASD only? Might be easier to pull fuse instead of unplugging connector. This would make it easier to reconnect when going in for service.

That seems odd - we know ASD gets piped to the underseat subs but there are only 4 pairs?

They're all described as "low frequency signal". I wonder which actual speakers those 8 lines are going to.

Maybe there is a difference between HiFi (8 speakers) and optional HK wiring?

I've run with ASD and an amp. It isn't as pronounced as you might think but it does increase drone a bit at lower RPMs, enough that it made me code off ASD. It's a shame because the cabin is isolated enough that I miss hearing the engine, you really notice how muted the exhaust is by the cabin padding when you compare ASD off/on. I miss ASD but it's a trade off for better bass.

According to website https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/g...sav/1VnboDLQma the wiring looks the same for non-HK ASD. It just says "HiFi amplifier" in every instance instead of "Top HiFi amplifier".

I have a question into the genius to confirm whether fuse F218 is only used for ASD. From the wiring diagram https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/g...use/1VnbofGWyH it looks like it is only ASD. Surprised its 20A just for ASD. Seems like a lot of power.

Fuse F215 for Top HiFi Amplifier and Video module is only a 5A fuse.

My X3 has the base 676 stereo. When I disconnect the plug on the small amp, all sound goes away - even the seat belt, etc. chimes. Am I missing a step or is this a function of the base stereo?

This was great! Thanks. I prefer the car to sound natural as well, and hate the fake noises on Sport mode. Let the performance of the m40i do the talking!

The reference videos linked in Post #1 for a different model say that the mod only works with the Harmon Kardon system. In another post or reference I read that the standard HiFi system has the ASD amp wired in series with the audio amp which is likely your issue. Another post has a link to an M240 with a Harmon Kardon system that required a bypass harness to allow removing the ASD (it must have been in series with the audio amp on that model). It's likely you're stuck with a coding solution to eliminate the extra noise for now unless you're an electrical/electronics whiz.

Here are the links with the information I referred to from Post #1. The second link contains a discussion of how the Harmon Kardon is wired compared to the HiFi system (but on a different model; so, may not directly apply to the G01 X3).

Called the genius line. They cannot help with any technical info on fuse assignments and directed me to the dealer.

The schematic says F218 so my plan will be to reconnect the ASD before going for service and then yank the fuse afterward.

Let us know how it works out. Somebody has to be the experimenter. Thank you.
