My dealer said he'll have the order guide by July 1st. If I get it I'll post it up.

I think BMW Digital Key is different from the NFC technology that just debuted on the X5. The Digital Key is like a retrofit (less intuitive) version of the NFC implementation.

Very different from NFC where the phone directly connects to the car |

Sorry if I wasn’t clear, I know what NFC is and I know what remote unlocking is... I wasn’t implying that digital key is a watered down version of NFC, I was implying digital key appears to be a retrofit to accomplish the same thing (limited to unlocking, still need a key) with the hardware that is already in place in existing vehicles. We can already remote unlock our cars with BMW connected app, but it’s definitely not the same as the NFC technology /replacing/ your key to unlock and start your car.

Actually I just did some googling and it does in fact appear that “BMW Digital Key” is essentially a retrofit of the functionality just introduced in the X5 and its set to come out in July. Essentially most recent BMWs that have the wireless charging pad should be eligible for remote unlocking (via BMW connected services) and starting the car via placing the phone on the wireless charging pad. So it’s a cobbled together approach relying on BMW connected services (which hasn’t always been reliable in the past... sometimes it takes minutes if ever to unlock your car) to perform the unlock and the app on the phone to communicate with the wireless charger (via NFC) to grant access to start the car.
Also, it’s unclear if you still need to have your actual key on your person to engage the transmission and drive off. The article linked above makes it sounds like you do, but that doesn’t make any sense. The article states “We know what you’re thinking. “But what happens if I lose my phone? Do I lose access to start my BMW?” Fear not! Drivers will still need physical keys to drive the vehicle.” ... if that’s the case, why allow the engine to be started at all via placing your phone on the charger? Something doesn’t add up. One last edit, apparently BMW Digital Key is only rolling out on Samsung phones in July. Seriously? BMW doesn’t even do Android Auto, but does do Apple CarPlay, but yet the digital key is effectively limited to Android initially? How does that make any sense?! Anyone have confirmation? Probably discussed in a different thread but do most of you use the shutoff feature? Does it save fuel and/or is it hard on the vehicle? |

I've also noticed that it sometimes shuts the engine off when I'm creeping in very slow traffic (1-5 mph), only to restart almost immediately, which is a bit jarring. Honestly, my complaints about ASS would be resolved if BMW programmed the engine to only shut off after I've come to a complete stop. The way it is now is pretty ridiculous, considering how little gas is saved in that half second before coming to a stop. I wish they would allow you to keep ASS turned off or on by memory of the last setting. Instead, I end up forgetting and hitting the button after the first ungraceful stop. |

I have noticed this so much today... slow down approaching red lights... change to green so step off the brake and the car has cut out... then has to restart with a jolt... driving me mad! Every other stop-start I’ve driven, including their own mini JCW, only cut the engine if you stop completely and apply enough break. If you only lightly press the brake then the engine would keep running.... why can’t the M40 do this as refined as the other manufacturers? ? |
